I loved the fact that it starts where the first book left off...no recapping. The historical facts are great and pretty accurate!
There are so many wonderful characters in her series. I do love the main character of Diana..and the way she comes into her powers she had so long denied. This author is a wonderful story teller!
I have not listened to any of her other performances, but she was wonderful! I will definately look for other stories by her.
Phillip...the stories he could tell would be endless!
Its a great read although a little slow to start.
Matthew and Dianna are the favourites of mine, I guess because they are the main characters in the book.
Both Matthew & Dianna, although she is awesome at playing so many different characters. I had not realized that she played them all to begin with. I had thought there was others playing different parts.
No it is just a good read.
you have to read the first story first called "A discovery of witches" without reading the first one you would have no idea what the second one is about. Although she does keep refering to the past which is in the forst book.
This is only the second audiobook I've ever listened to and the first one was A Discovery of Witches. In my opinion this book tops the 1st in the series (and I loved that one).
I am enjoying learning about Diana's powers
Ms. Ikeda does a wonderful job depicting all of the different characters and keeping them straight for me.
I'm a newbie at audiobooks but I have found 2 favorites right off the bat. This book will keep you wanting more for sure!
I loved the first book and couldn't wait for the second to be released as an audible book, but I didn't enjoy this as much as the first book. Something just didn't do it for me, I kept waiting for something more to happen and it never did...but the overall story is still interesting enough to hold your attention.
I highly recommend this audiobook. The reader, Jennifer Ikeda, is one of my favorites, an expert at accents. Bad accents is a pet peeve of mine, but she does at least five perfectly, probably more. The story itself is expertly weaved, but I would definitely tell you to read the first book before this one so you can get all the nuances.
Time travel is possible. YOu'll believe it.
Good continuation of the story. This one was a little slow and not very exciting.
I'm still interested in another book though. So I would suggest reading it if you liked the first book.
I'm a writer. I look for works of fiction at least 20 hours long. I favor history, thrillers, fantasy, and romance; all non-formulaic.
This book was full of everything, "A Discovery of Witches" left me wanting: Authentic time travel, adventure, and FINALLY the consummation of Matthew and Diana's marriage. A complex plot is skillfully filled in and important characters are introduced. The author manages an elegant but no-nonsense literariness with her gorgeous use of imagery, foreshadowing, and suspense.
This is definitely worth the credit. It is beautifully written, well narrated, and a fun listen.
I am a 50ish mother of two and grandma of one who completed her first reading of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by the eight grade.
As with A Discovery of Witches, this story has it's highs and lows. Although not as fast as paced as the introductory novel, this second installment takes it's time and therefore may seem "slow" to some. But the sparse interjections of present vs. past will hook an astute reader. This second novel seems to be the 'set up" of better things to come.
The background provided and Deborah's take on the origins/history of magic are unique and therefore noteworthy. The story does not follow old and tired formulas surrounding the history of magic and it's practice. It is therefore not a lazy writer's approach to the subject of magic. It is refreshingly different.
Jennifer's performance is unparallelled. Her pronunciation and accents are beyond comparison. The languages in the first novel ranges from British English to American English to French, to Latin. The second novel incorporates all of the same and adds Greek, Spanish and Italian. All of this while encompassing numerous male and female characters. Usually I prefer to read books, but Jennifer brings the story alive.
While this book may have not quite lived up to my expectations, it did set the stage for the final installment and leaves the reader with a very big question. Hopefully, all will be answered in book 3.
good reading if you read the first, not sure you could follow the character line if not.
time travel, true love, magic all the things that make fiction fun!
Just looking for an enjoyable story! Books are my passion.
I very seldom read any book twice.
After reading The Discovery of Witches, I couldn't wait for this one to come out and I wasn't disappointed. Harkness described the past in great detail, and her characters were enjoyable.
