No. I wouldn't recommend the audio version of this book to anyone. The narrator is awful. It's as if my GPS system is reading this book to me. It's a shame because the content is great and it is well written.
Olivia Fox Cabane is a great author and I wholly recommend the printed version of The Charisma Myth. I learned valuable insights about body language, tone of voice, and listening to people. My poor review does not reflect her writing at all.
Hire someone else. The narrator sounds like an answering service: "For billing, press 1. For questions about your whatever, press 2..."
Part of my job involves teaching and public speaking. Her insights on body language and perception were invaluable to me.
Tons of actionable steps to improving communication and life with others. I came across this book while reading a ton of other self help and communications books and this one was the only one I listened to twice. Follow through with the tricks and watch your relationships with others grow and succeed. 5 stars all around.
I struggled mightily to get through this book, but in the end I floundered. I don't think it's any fault of the author, as so many people have said they benefited from this book. I personally could not connect with the message of the book. One day, I will chose to go back and finish the book and maybe discover what I had been missing from the first time. Until then, I cannot give this book any review more than 3 stars, since it was not compelling enough to keep me reading.
The idea that anyone can master the art of charisma falls very short of what I believe after what I read. Anyone can learn to play a game, a sport, or learn a skill, but it is my belief that only certain people can master those ideas. Was Oprah born charismatic, or did she learn it. Probably both right? Same for Michael Jordan, and Einstein. Einstein had to learn math, but there was some innate ability inside him that made him who he was.
I did not find any ideas so far remotely helpful or relatable. The relatablity of the book is very important to me, as that is what keeps me interested. I don't believe I'm uncharismatic, in fact I take pleasure in my ability to charm certain people. But I'm not naturally charming, and do believe some part of me wants to develop that. This book did not give me any insight into my own abilities. So I couldn't help but turn away.
Good information. Well presented. Some info borrowed (nearly verbatim) from other sources, but you can never hear wisdom too many times.
Probably not. Very little new to me.
I think the structure is there. Ideas are valid, though not new.
I would say not in this performance.
If you're unfamiliar with the content - wait for a new narrator.
