It's hard to write a review of this book that doesn't give away some of the wonderful secrets that make it such an enjoyable listen. I'd say--if you like steampunk, you will like this, even though it's not a steampunk book. If you like mysteries that go to unexpected places. If you like stories with a good sense of humor.
Plus, the narration is great, with super strong voice acting for characters of both sexes. I hope that Clines and Porter will team up on many books to come.
not what I expected, way more mystery, adventure, action, comedy, sci-fi...... didn't even know that I like sci-fi.
I like the characters and the possibility.
No but I am searching my next buy based on Narrator not Author.
If it wasn't as long as it is, yes I would have listened in one sitting.
I loved the book but loved Ray Porter just as much. He is an awesome narrator!
Suspenseful, Entertaining, Well-Narrated
This book reminded me of some of Sydney Sheldon's better stories. The chapters are fairly short (about 80 in all). Each one makes you want to keep going with the story. Usually I just listen to audiobooks in the car, but I found myself taking my device into the house and listening any time I could find a few minutes.
Mr. Porter is very easy to listen to. He handled character voices well.
Absolutely! I enjoyed it so much, I plan to listen to it again, or possibly buy the book in paper form.
Some stories are fairly predictable, which can be a bit of a disappointment. This one was not. The story was well-thought out, and had a good balance of narrative and dialogue. I wasn't expecting the science-fiction element, and rarely read or listen to this category of work. I am happy I didn't pass on "14". I truly enjoyed it.
It's a mystery that just keeps getting bigger and more amazing as you go.
It's a well written and very fun book. Ray Porter's performance as narrator really brought it to life. The Characters are very believable and vivid.
Some Locks Should Never Be Opened.
14 was a very fun and engaging story. The WOW factor just kept getting bigger with every new turn. Some things were telegraphed wayyyyy ahead and weren't as surprising as maybe intended, but still made for a good story.
I am glad I listed to it and would recommend it; but once was enough. I don't typically read sci-fi books but I really enjoyed this one. Was a nice change of pace and didn't have any problem finishing the book. Good story.
It is very close to the top. I will be buying some more of Peter Clines books right now.
Probably finally openening 14
He is a GREAT narrator. Buy the end I thought there were 5 or 6 different people reading he book. Loved him and will look for more books that he has narrated.
Very close. There are several spots that you cant stop listening to tell it reaches the climax. Then you get a break building up to the next one.
Sci-Fi, Fiction, Real world meets not even close to real world. It all works
Yes, very imaginative and thoroughly modern take on the Cthulu Mythos
Ted, retired Special Ops guy - voice actor did a great job with him and ALL the parts
some of the amazing revelations which I won't spoil - two in particular I can think of
Kept me guessing almost all the time
I was very pleasantly surprised
Great story and narrator. But the big reveal is a little clichéd. I still listened to it all night.
It was like listening to a Scooby Doo mystery for adults. The characters were likable and fun. The story careened into weirdness about halfway through, but it was a good summer listen.
Sure. It was a fun read.
Not much to say that hasn't been said in other reviews, other than just to agree that this is a tremendous story, with outstanding characters, narrated perfectly. A long book that is interesting from start to finish.
All of the characters are terrific. Each one fits perfectly into this story. The narrator is awesome at really bringing out their personality. You feel like you are one of the "gang", and want to hang out with them on the rooftop, sipping a beer.
