Fun, Mysterious, Different
I can't think of another book to compare it to. There's mystery, monsters, other dimensions, and everyday life.
Yes, it made me laugh several times. There were movie references that caught me off guard and 'Ah HA' moments that kept me listening longer.
This fantasy mystery book was well written. I enjoyed learning about all the characters and wondering about what they would do next or where the story was going. I've never read a Peter Cline's book before. I can't wait to try another one of his books.
Not sure why I was surprised, I thoroughly enjoy Peter's "Ex" series, and this was even better. Characters are nicely developed (maybe a little cliched, but it works), story is interesting with well placed twists and turns, and the narrator is great.
14 is an enjoyable read. Imagine getting a great deal on an apartment and while you notice there are distinctly odd aspects to the building you find out there are only more when you meet your neighbors. Everyone ignores the oddities. Including neon green 5 legged roaches. Do you choose to buck the system? If you are Nate(an otherwise laid back, lost, uninspired but nice individual), you do. You've got to go all in on something in life and this is his mission.
It is an absolute nod to Lovecraft. If you like Lovecraft you will be in heaven, but even if you are not the Lovecraft superfan it is still entertaining. There is a lot of Scooby doo, who dun it humor, along with a healthy dose of self mockery at each tenants search for meaning in their life. The characters are endearing. They are predictable and fit into boxes, but Clines recognizes and makes fun of that.
If you like a little science fiction mixed in your mystery with a side of humor, read it, or get the audible version, Ray Porter does a fine job. He is in tune with with Clines humor and sarcasm.
By Peter Clines
Narrated by Ray Porter
Length 12 hr. 34 min. 48 sec.
Let us start with the narrator. This is a professional. From the get go the reader was absolutely sure who in the book was busy speaking at any given moment. His pacing and his cadence was expertly done and intrigued and never ever bored or annoyed. Brilliant. 5 * job.
I buy books based on covers or known authors. I fell in love with this cover and only read the blurb while I was already listening to the audio book. So according to me the cover is 5*
A good mix of mostly everyday people with no special talents or extra sensory perception was refreshing. Given Tim could do a few things the average Joe cannot but then so could Veek. I fell in love with the characters and the author threw me for a loop with one of them turning out to be other than I figured.
Amazing. Need I say more?
Fresh, new, familiar enough to be comfortable and in that lies the crux. It is this same familiarity that drew me in thinking…ok so the fuss is? By the time the fuss is explained I was already hooked and could not put the book down. I did not want to put the book down. Amazing story.
So to recap.
If you are looking for a thriller written by a master in the genre this is the book for you.
If you love plot twists and unexpected happenings, this is the book for you.
If you, like me, love an ending that is neatly wrapped and done then this is the book for you.
So. What are you waiting for?
The plot of 14 is awesome and will keep you wondering what in the world is up with the new apartment the protagonist has moved into. Narration was good, although I think the accents and female parts came off a little odd at times.
Photographer's Moll, Chicken breeder, school administrator and owned by four dogs. Busy life, Happy life!
So how is it that I loved this book? I couldn't stop listening! A 5 Star story and performance, I urge you to give it a try. I'm going to see if there's anything else by this author.
Yes, and already did.
Now, if I told you that, I would spoil the fun, wouldn't I?
Ray Porter is a brilliant narrator that could make you see the scenes and visualize everything written in the book as if you've watched it as a movie.
A very important part of my audible experience was the talent of Mr Porter.
A completely unexpected story line. I could never anticipate what will happen next.
A whole lot of puzzle pieces that slowly come together, but unlike a regular jigsaw puzzle, you never have the chance to take a glimps at the picture until it's completely solved and then you figure it out like a kick in the stomach!
I had to give it only 4 stars because of some small unsolved issues such as the riddle of room 16 (I don't want to make any spoilers), the big machine room on the roof, and the mystery of the black light.
It left me with some questions that had no answers, but other than that - a must listen to any thrill seekers!
This book felt like a project that was missing some parts. The story revolved around the weirdness of the building, giving the reader some puzzles to play with. Some of the items introduced to the reader really didn't go anywhere - it just felt like filler. And then the shift at the end was a bit abrupt, as the ending.
The Narrator sounds exactly like Brian the dog off Family Guy. I couldn't stop picturing Brian talking to me or waiting for Stewie to show up.
Here is how I rank this book among some current entries in the paranormal fantasy genre:
1. Dresden series by Jim Butcher
2. Monster Hunter series by Larry Correia
3. Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne
4. John Dies at the End by David Wong
5. 14 (This Book)
6. This book is full of spiders by David Wong
I put it toward the bottom. It was slow and didn't seem to know where it was going. I mean it was ok, but nothing I'd get excited about and I don't think I'll read his other stuff.
If you like "lost" this the book for you. That was one of the reviews I read before buying and I kept waiting for something to happen as I waited when I was watching "lost". Peter Clines knows how to pick his times. You get in touch with characters and I felt I was leaving the whole thing.
There is one moment when they start to reveal what is going on. When they go to the basement and find the big "thing" and start really investigating and joining all the clues. I really loved that part.
He is great. I think this is the first book I read that is narrated by him but he does a great job. He keeps his voices very consistent and even when I got lost on the narration, I knew I could recognize all the characters.
When they opened apartment 14!!!!
If you liked "lost", this is the book for you. I have enough for now of this kind of book, but I really want to listen to another book narrated by Ray Porter.
If this is your first Peter Clines book, be prepared for the unexpected ... frequently. What a mind. This trip of fantasy is like no other. You will enjoy every minute. Ray Porter does a fantastic job. Have fun!
