A page turner! Great story. Intriguing story sprinkled throughout with interesting characters.
I was on the edge of my seat most of the time. A thoroughly enjoyable read, right up to the end.
I highly recommend this book! The storyline was "magical" and masterfully, well-threaded throughout by the author. A great progression, all questions revisited and answered at the appropriate time. Story progresses at a really nice pace! Story threaded throughout with many wonderful surprises! Wonderful, spot-on, characters and character development. One character-event made me cry. And, the author tied everything up at the end nicely. Totally original story! I thought Peter Clines wrote just a fabulous book and ending! If you have an active imagination, you will most certainly enjoy this book! Just hated when it ended, felt sad leaving all the characters. Doesn't disappoint!
I would definitely recommend this book because it was engrossing, engaging suspenseful and funny at the same time!
My favorite character was Roger. He was a Neanderthal but totally lovable!
He was the manifestation of Nate. I loved the character as much as I did totally because of Ray Porter.
It creeped me out during the monster parts! I didn't want to listen to it at night lol!
I loved this book.
Great original concept
It's a shame that more original books like this are not made into movies. Instead we get the same old plot lines and sequels to films where there are great stories like this that would make for a much better film.
14 was a great book was an original plot with some great twists and turns. Im definitely looking forward to checking out other books by Peter Clines.
Authors I like: Patrick O'Brian, Frederick Forsyth, Jane Austen, John Le Carre, Alan Furst, Jon Krakauer, Ernest Hemingway.
"14" starts off strong enough but the longer it went on the more glaring its shortcomings became . The author's voice as a writer is just not mature yet. He does not write with anything at all approaching economy, and consequently many scenes drag on and on. The dialogue is dull and predictable and, worse, often serves to detract from the plot or undermine the tone of the story rather than contribute to it. And perhaps worst of all, the tale reaches at a point where it becomes essentially fan fiction of H.P. Lovecraft in that the underlying premise is borrowed directly from Lovecraft rather than anything actually imagined by Clines.
This is a mystery novel. I didn't know that going into it, and I'm probably giving it a lower score because I just don't favor mystery novels. That being said, the book was pretty enjoyable and performed well. Without giving too much away, I'll say it was amazing how the story changes from reality to fantastical.
What I liked about this book: The love interest. Their chemistry is non-conventional, and really refreshing. I really liked all the characters, they were real, likable people that you would want to hang out with later, and you really cared for them. Which is surprising, because it's a large cast for such a small book.
What I didn't like: Now that I've listened to it and the mystery is solved, I don't want to listen to it again. Again, this is my problem with mysteries in general, so I'm probably biased. It was a little slow, and I find the main character the most uninteresting of the lot, though I love the other characters.
Will I listen to it again: No, I don't think so. BUt I am glad to have listened to it in the first place
Reader of all things science fiction, fantasy, mystery and paranormal.
I loved this book. It starts just a little slow, building up to a fantastic mystery. I was dying to know what was behind door 14 and I was not disappointed.
It isn't really like anything else out there. I think it has the same sort of appeal as The Rook.
An excellent narrator, Ray Porter managed to make each character distinct without being cartoony. He is very consistent with his accents and reads at a good pace.
Some fresh ideas, decent character development and a few plot twists. Narrator breathes life into the story with a variety of character voices including some authentic accents.
Love to read and listen to audiobooks! Want books/audios to take me away into the story.
One of the best. When the author and narrator combine to make me feel as if I"m there with the characters, waiting and searching for answers .. that's awesome. Really good character development. Narrator was spot on.
He is one of my favorites.
Ask Peter Clines to do another book of this type ... fantasy, terror, gripping!
Would recommend it to those who like a good build up and know a bit about the H. P. Lovecraft universe.
Blackhole behind a certain apartment door....
When they got to the bottom of the tunnel..
As others have said, don't read too much about this book- just dive in, and be prepared for a mystery, thriller, haunted, steampunk, science fiction, fantasy, adult Scooby Doo. I can't imagine any listener not finding something to pull them in.
Narration is top-notch. I have listened to 70+ Audiobooks, and no other narrator manages to pull off so many characters so well.
