The story was too far fetched to be believable and the characters lack depth.
The only saving grace was the narration, which was quite good.
Dog lover & book addict.
I like the twists in it. I did not expect certain things about the story at all or the direction it was taking.
Both my husband and I loved this book. Its an oddball intriguing sci-fi mystery of sorts. We think they should make it into a movie.
I wanted to like this book, but Clines made it impossible for me with every unnecessary reference to the hot bodies and/or emotional fragility of his female characters. Such a disappointment. Women are more than "tits" and tears.
The story was just so original in how it built the suspense that I couldn't stop listening to it. The plot was clever as hell and I had no idea where it would end up. I am pleased to say I didn't see the turn it would take at the end so the twist was such a bonus treat....this book was just a lot of fun to listen to. You will be hooked in a few minutes! I am a Jeremy Robinson and Jonathan Maberry fan so I will now add Peter Clines to my fav list. I am downloading another of his books right after this!
This is the first book I listened to by Clines. I think he is a special author. I'm not a big fan of science fiction, at least not of this variety. And by 3/4 of the way through the book I lost interest in the story. BUT I kept listening. He developed characters in a way that I cared about them. Not just the protagonist, but a bunch of them. The dialogue was great. Mixing in modern metaphors and quotes from movies and he made it consistent with their different personalities. I like characters that have a sense of humor. Many good authors can do one or even two characters that are funny. Clines did 5 in this book. Can you imagine how hard that is? Robert Parker could do it. So can Adrian McKinty. But that's about it.
I like the overall concept of the story however the weren't enough details to back up the plot and phantasmagorical conclusions. Characters were pleasantly written but not fleshed out enough for me to form a great visual image in my head. Overall I would not dissuade any one from reading the book but just felt it could've been sharper.
This book drew me in from the start. It's cleverly engaging and reads like a mystery sci fi novel. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a story that keeps you guessing with some realism mixed in with the imaginary. Can't wait to read The Fold next!!
