The last quarter of the story saved this whole book for me. It had a very slow take off. The end got really exciting and made the book worth recommending. I enjoyed the character named Tim and hoped the book would elaborate on his story, but that didn't really happen. Oh well. I also would have liked maybe a little bit more back story on the man that started it all, but that was sort of abbreviated, too. Oh well.
This is a genre-bending thriller that starts out like a typical haunted house yarn, and takes dozens of unexpected turns. Utterly fantastic.
Five minutes after the book ended, I was calling people I know to recommend it.
The narrator's interpretation of the sqwhale speaking. Creeeeppppyyyy. Yeah, that's sqwhale. Not sure how the author spelled it, but after you listen, you will understand.
Apartment 14. You gotta listen to understand.
I don't know, but they should SOOOO make this into a movie. I'd buy my ticket right now. It has everything for a great movie: humor, romance, mystery, thriller, sci-fi, monsters, villains, heros and you really don't see the twists coming.
I ended up listening to the book because it kept showing up on multiple lists. Funny thing is, I wouldn't have bought it if I realized it was Sci-Fi because I am not really into that genre. But this book starts out as a mystery thriller for the first 2/3 of the book, then goes into the hardcore sci-fi. By that point, I was so engrossed in the story and the characters that I couldn't wait to listen to what was coming up next. Author does a great job breathing life into the characters and the narration is one of the best I've ever heard. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Story was poor. In reading this, I was disappointed in the flow of the story. It seems that the author did not really plan this out well.
The actual plot was actually boring and it was almost impossible to develop empathy for the characters. Furthermore, huge leaps from possible other scenarios that were developed existed. It switched from a perplexed individual searching for answers who was fairly inept at most of life's tasks to scenes from a Lord of the Rings. A true waste of money in purchasing this book.
Did not detract but it is tough to rate a narrator that was given such a poor story. I feel it is unfair to rate the narrator based on this story.
The only redeeming quality is that the summary made the book seem interesting enough to purchase. Thus, it impressed me as being able to extract hard earned dollars from me.
I really enjoyed this book and was hooked through the whole thing. It was very creative and entertaining. I did not, however, completely like the story toward the end of the book once the mystery was fully discovered. What started off as kinda freaky/scary became super cheesy to the point that it made me laugh, but overall I did really like how everything unfolded and how suspenseful it was.
The narrator was enjoyable to listen to and did the voices well.
Requires some SERIOUS suspension of disbelief. If you're able to do that, it's a fun thriller. If you can't, it's just plain ridiculous.
This is a good, well written and very nicely narrated story. The characters are fleshed out to a medium degree but kept my attention. It does have a "made for tv" feel about it [yes I know it's a book]. The style of writing conveys no sense of horror however. A huge disappointment for a book that invokes Lovecraft lore. Still a good listen if you're driving or going for a long walk. Moves quickly, decent mystery and has lots of action. If I were more into SciFi I'd be less critical of the lack of 'horror' and probably would have given this one more star.
fast paced; kept me guessing. Interesting characters.
too long for one sitting but I was glued to it for 3 days.
I've been stuck for months on a couple of very literary novels that were intellectually stimulating but put me to sleep. 14 was such a relief. It grabbed my attention and didn't let me go. The references to H.P. Lovecraft and others associated with early scifi/horror made me chuckle and relate at an entirely different level. Very suspenseful. I'm looking forward to more from this author and narrater.
Interesting book with a lot of different twists. I think it kind of falls off the rails at the end but still an entertaining read.
