I liked that this is a relatively modern historical fiction. I love classic film, so the way Jess Walter wrote a then-and-now novel that involved a real movie (Cleopatra) filmed on location in Italy, and tied real actors (Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor) and film makers (Joseph Mankiewicz) to these fictional characters was a real treat. I loved Pasquale, and developed a profound respect for this man who honestly and sincerely did the right thing, with no regrets. I give it a 4 because I didn't instantly love it. I was more than halfway through before I developed feelings for the characters.
Overall it's annoyingly romantic and verges on kitsch. But then you know what you're getting right from the start, so you just need to appreciate the fact that it does deliver.
I don't know how he did it, be he managed to make each character unique in his or her delivery. Thoroughly enjoyed his narration.
The narration accents were awful, the story was difficult to follow
Too confusing to follow ( I listen while driving to and from work) ... may have to listen again to see if I missed something that would have improved my listening experience
may try to listen again- considering returning but not sure I can -
It was fun trying to piece together how the stories interweave, multiple little tales to tell a big story. And then was happy that not all my predictions came true.
Shane Wheeler. I loved the story behind "Donner!"
Took me a couple chapters to get into it. But then didn't want it to end.
I will absolutely listen to Beautiful Ruins again and recommend it to others because it is a sad and funny and heartwrenching story narrated in spectacular fashion. Even though the story bounces between time and place, you always feel connected with the character and context. This was my first Ballerini-narrated book and I will actively seek out more of his work. He is brilliant and emphathetic and simply an excellent storyteller.
Yes, In fact I am doing so now
I felt I was part of the story just did not want it to end!
Pasquale - very endearing
I am a new memeber and this is a must for new membership
I really loved this book. Edoardo Ballerini is now one of my favorite narrators. He really brought these characters to life for me. I've always been a fan of novels that span several decades, and this is no exception. Beautiful Ruins is a fairly predictable story but beautifully written and worth the listen.
I loved this book! I lost sleep reading this story. I loved Edoardo Ballerini narration.
Wow. What a beautiful book. Great performance. Great ending that made me cry. I don't know that I've ever actually cried when a book ended. What a gift.
