The writing and narration were definitely good enough to keep me listening and wanting to know how the story would play out, but something about the pacing made it fairly easy to guess most of the twists and turns before they happened; so as far as suspense, this wasn't exactly edge-of-your-seat thrilling. But it's just suspenseful enough to keep you listening.
The narration was great, they really captured the characters well, even when they were using different voices for other characters through the memory of the protagonists.
This was an enjoyable listen, for sure, though I was expecting more based on all the reviews. I personally did not find any of the surprises to be that shocking, in fact I found myself waiting for things that I knew would inevitably happen. Even so, I enjoyed the way the writer got into the heads of these two characters that SHOULD be hard to relate to, and yet you still get sucked into their world.
At halfway through the book, the book went from snail pace slow, to AWESOME! I loved it! I was having the time of my life, the suspense, the mystery, the thrill, it was an addiction I couldn't put down, but it took like 10 hours of listening to even get to that point! And you have to get through the horrifically slow 10 hours first because that's the set up, the slow climb to the fantastic turning point! Then the end came, and no I will NOT spoil it for you. What I will say is that it left me scathing. It left me furious and out of place. I spent the entire day in an outrage. A total cope out by the writer. It felt lazy! I was so angry with the writer, who had set the story up with this expectation, and yet it fizzled out.. into something awful. I will not say more, but please go into this story expecting a fantastic twist, it was really addictive, just know the ending isn't what you expect, or want. Don't let it ruin your day, or perception of the writer.
Nothing. I did not like the storyline one bit
I stayed mad and disappointed at the inhumanity of the characters
Better narrators would have helped tremendously. I read this book when it was first published and thought Gillian Flynn was an incredibly gifted writer, particularly after I read her first two, lesser known books. That said, the narrators of this book destroyed the brilliance of the writing with their shrill voices, their forced emotions and their complete lack of skill.
I don't think I can compare this book to any other work. Gillian Flynn is truly a uniquely gifted writer who will continue to create fiction which stands out as brilliant and entertaining.
Using narrators who had the ability to actually perform as skilled actors would make the audio version worthy of the written word.
The book is fabulous. The narration is terrible. Don't blame Gillian Flynn for the poor quality of this Audible offering.
A story with believable characters would be a start. Maybe this is the female genre of science fiction."Spoiler ALERT" Do not read farther if you intend to listen to this book.......
I wanted to listen to the book before going to see the movie. Based on the reviews, I thought this was going to be an enjoyable read. Boy! Was I wrong!!Amy's character is unbelievable. The author tried hard to portray her as an intelligent person who plans her conquests a year into the future, but she cannot anticipate getting robbed of all her money by two seedy opportunists. Nor can see foresee a hostage situation. Amy goes to all the trouble to frame Nick because of his infidelity, only to commit murder to get back to him so they can live happily ever after. Why, because he says some nice things about her. Then after all Amy does to him, Nick stays with her. This confounds me. I have never returned a book back to Audible in the 14 years I have been a member, but I am with this one.
Exciting, unpredictable, real
The plot twists were the most memorable parts of the book
I'm glad to find a book that is not a "Young Adult" that I enjoyed!!! I think I will try some of her other titles too!!
Absolutely! The story is one of my favorites and listening to it really added some oomph.
Julia Whelan was really great. Her portrayal of Amy is really spot on especially with such a...character.
I would recommend this book because it's an easy listen but so captivating. The plot has several twists and the ending is impossible to guess.
I liked that the voices changed showing me when the character's narration changed. It made the book easier to listen and understand.
Yuck. This was a horribly written book full of cheap twists and weak characterization. I listened to it because I'd spent money on it and had to follow it through, but if this is what Americans want to read ... wow. God save us all.
It was an exciting psychological thriller.
The end was disappointing, otherwise I would give this 5 stars.
