I've read all the other books in this series and enjoyed them...the first two more than the third. But this one I simply can't get into. I've started and abandoned it 3 times and that's my limit. It's boring, confusing, implausible and just not worth anymore of my time. The narration was fine so that wasn't an issue. I just didn't care about any character in the story.
Keeps you wanting more! okay...that's 4 words, but who cares :)
getting all the clues and putting the pieces together.
My first audio books narrated by Edoardo Ballerini and his voice is wonderful! Going from one character to another and never missing a beat
The wit of the writer is fabulous. He gives you a good chuckle and then throws in some unexpected grossness that keeps you wanting more
All in all the Matthew Corbett novels are awesome! I've finished 6 Robert McCammon books in about a month and about the get the 7th! Keep up the good work!
Excellent book, excellent performance, fabulous and detailed characters! The only thing to keep me from rating this book at 100% is that the material can be disturbing to hear at times. McCammon knows how to write evil and it's twisted, gruesome forms. I cringed a time or two in this read. Otherwise, another excellent work from a master storyteller, start to finish!
Book 4 and I'm not even close to being tired of the predicaments that Matthew Corbett seems to find himself in. This is yet another engrossing novel in the series and it's just as fresh and enjoyable as the first. I am a bit concerned about Matthew's sex life, as he cannot seem to have "experiences" where he is not a captive to the charms of an aggressive female; a notable occurrence on all four books thus far. This was another colorful ride with characters old and new, continuing to weave our favorite characters throughout. What will happen next? One more book awaits!!!
I have read this entire series and really enjoyed this book as well. It's fast paced, exciting, well written, and the narration is exceptional.
However, keep in mind that it requires that the reader suspend a good amount of disbelief. Some of the "coincidences" are laughable, but even so I really enjoyed the story and kept rushing back to listen to see what would happen next. If you read and enjoyed the previous Mathew Corbett books you will probably enjoy this one as well.
Again, I really enjoyed listening to the continuing sagas of Matthew. So well written, so well narrated. The plot was pretty much exciting from beginning to end.
My only concern is that the story is still not done, and the reviews for the book that follow this one are not stellar.
But, this book was a fantastic listen!
This is a good book and in many ways an excellent continuation of the series. I'd rank it about 7th or so of the books I've heard. The narration is good, the flow is good, there are, however, some annoying plot issues -- why on earth does Matthew foist off Berry? What, she can't be a competent Harper employee? They can't be a team? The sacrificial love bit is a drawback in the series. The Napoleon of crime is also a bit too reminiscent of Moriarty.
the blowing up of the fort.
Mathew is the main character and very empathetic, but I actually like Berry.
My reviews don't ever seem to be helpful. Not sure what a helpful review is. But I can say with experience that the Matthew Corbett series is riveting and intense. If you are an avid Audible reader, you will not be disappointed... helpful or not.
Fine art photographer, retired English professor, dog mom to an adorable Maltese mix, long-time Californian, genealogist, what else?
I. love. these. books. I've never had much interest in the Colonial period as history, but McCammon really makes it come to life. I have a crush on Matthew Corbett (until his scene with Berry at the end of the book!), who's really a wonderful, complex character. The novels veer a little bit toward the supernatural at times, but that's okay with me. The cast of characters McCammon creates is also filled with interesting, frightening, and funny people. And Edoardo Ballerini -- another crush. He's fabulous.
