Such a good start to the book, really wanted to find out more, and the story really grew into a charming read. A different 'feel' to your normal thriller murder mystery. If Ian Banks and Jo Nesbo were fine dining, this is hearty rustic shepherds pie - simple, hugely enjoyable and very satisfying!
"A Great read"
This is my first read of Robert Goddard and what a pleasant surprise it was. Great story that kept me interested all the way through. I have downloaded another book already.
"Well written and well narrated."
This book is well written with good characterisation and to some degree it was a satisfyingly complex plot. It is sort of a family saga/murder mystery. The narration is excellent. However, what spoilt it for me was that by two thirds of the way through there could only be one logical suspect for all of the deaths and subterfuge and indeed this turned out to be the case. If I was giving the book a title it would be Pawn as the main character seems to have acted like one.
"A good story"
The author has worked a good plot and I listened to the end. I felt that it could have been done more justice if a different 'reader' could have been found. Philip Franks has a wonderful voice but it tends to be quiet monotone and lacked feeling and passion in a story which needed it.
I always enjoy Robert Goddard's books but some are definitely better than others, and this is one of the better ones. Alongside the plot - which is always intriguing - there are some good character studies and the whole thing is very well narrated by Philip Franks, who draws the listener into the story. My dogs have had extended walks and I have sat in a few car parks at the end of my journeys, just so I could listen to the next bit! Recommended.
"Robert Goddard at his best"
A great listen. Philip Franks does a brilliant job at bringing the characters to life. I had not enjoyed the last few Goddard novels as much as his earlier work but this one is a real gem. Enjoyed it right from the off. I would highly recommend.
"A Good Listen"
I enjoyed this book - the story held me and I had that "I don't want to stop listening..." feeling when I reach the end of a journey. It is well read - so many times a good book can be spoiled by bed narrator. The old critisism I would have is the story gets quite involved at the end and a over complex.
"Recommended without reservation"
I found this book compelling - one of the better books that I've read all year. It doesn't really matter, but just one small point - I didn't think that when the reason behind the story becomes clear that this would really spark the events that preceded the revelation, although this no way spoils the enjoyment of the book overall. Recommended without reservation.
Really enjoyed this book, Philip Franks was also a great narrator, very natural, and gave the people in the story believable accents. Good story, really couldn't work out how it would end, with lots of little twists throughout the book. Enjoyed this one so much, have downloaded another Robert Goddard book to listen to
One of the best books by Robert Goddard I have read or listened to.
Probably the fastest I have completed a book from Audible, I just could not wait to listen to the next chapter and when I reached the end, I just wished there were more chapters to enjoy.
Wonderfully read by Phillip Franks.
