The Gray Man
The writing didn't let the performer to perform
Maybe I'm unfair since I couldn't get passed the first hour.
Worthwhile read but performance by Rob Patterson was flat and boring. There were also gaps and repeated words and phrases in the recording.
No, there are much better readers out there.
A truly excellent first effort from an "insider's" perspective (Henshaw was a former CIA analyst). Also adds some Tom-Clancy-like military action.
Choppy reading in places; poor transitions (e.g., often provides no audible pause when scenes change.)
(Sorry...three words just didn't work!)
No, but it gave me goosebumps a few times -- some of the scenarios were way too plausible!
Reallly looking forward to Henshaws next effort. I'll buy it for sure!
I stopped after giving this a good try. The moment I realized that the narrator was not even attempting to change his voice for the different characters, I'd had enough. The story seemed adequate, but not enough to override the 'reading' rather than 'acting' of the narrator. Makes me appreciate even more the excellence of so many narrators. When I first started audiobooks, I was surprised to hear the words 'performed' used to what I thought was just being 'read'. But I see the better ones truly are doing exactly that and making the audio experience as good as or better than reading the same book yourself.
It was a different area of focus than what I usually listen to.
It was good.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a good spy novel.
Rob did a fair job at differntiating the characters.
I think the editing needed improving. Repeated sentences and words were noticed of couple of times during the narration.
One of the reasons I like to read book in this category is that some inner knowledge of
our government agencies is gained, since the author recently retired from the CIA there is probably about 100X more knowledge packed in to his book than any Flynn, Clancy, or Berenson novel. Of course "The Company" was excellent but that was the CIA from long ago. His characters were very interesting and likable and after finishing I was ready to download the next one but unfortunately he has not written it yet, so please Mark get to work!
