I will admit that it took me a while to get into this story. I listened to the first hour and a half or so and then dropped it because nothing had happened to grab me. Picked it back up about a month later on a long car ride. Was a good story to pass the time in the car and by the time the trip was over I was hooked!
I understand. It is a teen aged girl in the middle of a civil war, but honestly, how many times does she complain about things while others around her make great sacrifices while she stabs then in the back and refuses to face her own inner conflict. the way it is written makes her inner conflict so obvious that it becomes monotonous hearing about it. in print I would not have finished the book, but muscled through it on audible because I didn't have anything else loaded on my phone for a long drive.
While the overall plot and story line work to maintain your interest, Roth's dialogue and story line are insipid and juvenile - even for YA literature. Her writing shows little insight and is completely devoid of cleverness or intelligence. The performance is about what you'd expect a teenage girl to sound like but does becomes grating and childish too often. The movies are far better.
