As other reviews state, the narration isn't great. She spoke fast and upbeat, even in dire situations. She didn't try changing her voice for different characters and this sometimes made it hard to decipher which character was talking. But, it is a good story and I'm glad I didn't quit listening.
How do you ruin a good book when put to audio? Hire the worst actress possible for the task. Every character sounded the same: high pitched and annoying as hell. Changing the speed of the audio to its slowest cadence didn't help either. Read the book, instead.
I especially enjoyed the age difference between the two characters. It made it interesting and exciting to find out what would actually happen between the two. it was a very sweet ending.
At the very beginning I was a little squicked by the ages of the characters because you absolutely knew where the relationship was headed but then I suddenly remembered some very good friends who have the same age difference where she is 13 years older than he is and they have a wonderful marriage and grandchildren even so who cares how old other people are. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter a fig.
I was a little surprised at how long it took for the characters to develop the relationship but I guess the author did that to keep the relationship above board. Personally I think that in the real world it would have happened a lot sooner for comfort as well as passion.
But I really liked the story. Their struggle for survival, how much they both had to pull together and draw on inner strength neither knew they were capable of made an exciting story for me. And then the difficulties they had adjusting to going back to civilization after so long rang really true for me.
So yeah, I recommend this book.
Too busy to read as much as I'd like, Audible is the perfect solution. I'm a romance reader mostly, but can stray into any story.
I wasn't quite expecting this to be the emotional roller coaster that it was... It hurt so good! I loved every word and literally couldn't stop listening until it was over. I wish that they could have had a male narrator for TJ's chapters, but Heidi Baker did a fantastic job portraying both.
One of my all time favs! I absolutely love the story, so unique! The narration takes a bit of getting used too. It's not awful but the narrator speaks super fast.
In the middle. It was a nice world the author brings you into. Which is why I wish it were longer. There is so much detail that the author just skims over and you're left unsatisfied, wanting more. The cadence of the book moves too quick.
The narrator certainly sounded way too bubbly for characters that are supposed to be dealing with plane crashes, starvation, and multiple life-threatening issues. She sounded like she was describing the annoyance of a hangnail rather than a near-death experience. Usually I can get past a narrator's performance, but this one annoyed me to the end. I also wish they had a separate narrator for TJ's chapters. The narrator never switched up her voice for different characters - never added different personalities whatsoever. If you tuned out for a second, you lost who she was speaking for. Two thumbs way down for her.
I really love the concept of the book - and thought the author could have done SO MUCH MORE with it. Carried it deeper. And they definitely needed a different narrator. But other than that, the story is great. And I thought it had a good ending.
