This is a must read, happy to find another historical fiction novel of quality, the characters were well developed and likable, the story was engaging. Also the background history of the time was illuminating. You won't be disappointed or be able to put this one down.
I'm an avid audible book listener. I am a huge fan of supernatural books and like stuff that is scary but well written. I live in Denver Co
I enjoyed this book so much.
The narration was OUTSTANDING! Among the very best narration I've ever listened to.
The story included so many interesting pieces- 1690's law, justice, medicine, prejudices, fears, fashion, housekeeping, cooking, city development... I really could feel the world back then!
At just over 30 hours, it's a bit of an undertaking but I loved it!
A lot of this review is just my thoughts while listening to the book…
This book was so hard to put down between the great story and fabulous narration by Edoardo Ballerini I wanted the world to go away so I just listen without interruptions.
From English gentleman, to slaves, to women, to Indian Chiefs and everything in between Edoardo Ballerini is so absolutely amazing! Ballerini has earned a spot in my favorite narrators list his narration of this book was absolutely amazing. I will listen to anything he narrates!
There were times this book made my blood boil , these sickening men the way they treated and talked to Rachel and she just had to take it but I loved that the author let us know that our champion Matthew was feeling the same way right along with me! Matthew is so far ahead of his time and has his own mind and doesn’t go along with the hive mind thinking of this witch hunt. I have all these feelings about Rachel’s innocence but when she asks Matthew to hold her hand my mind says, but, but what if she is evil?!!? Great writing plus the hesitation the narrator (Ballerini) puts into Matthews’s voice had me on the edge of my seat. Matthew getting the whipping just broke my heart and made me sick to my stomach but it was an amazing scene.
I can’t stand this Reverend Jerusalem the minute I hear his voice the hair on the back of neck stands up if she really is a witch she should smite him! And Bidwell too he is such an ass!
There are times I feel so bad for Rachel it makes me want to cry and I am not sure I would have such strong emotions without the fantastic narration.
I was a bit shocked by a certain scene with a horse.
I don’t know why this has been shelved in horror because as usual the demons and devils are just good old human beings. This book is not paranormal, fantasy or horror it is just a good old fashioned mystery.
This was a long story (31 hours on audio) but it kept me rapt the entire time it never bogged down and I enjoyed every word. This was such an interesting look at life at the end of the 1600’s, the superstitions that ruled people’s hearts and the recent fever deaths that still remain in people’s memory. I will definitely continue to listen to this series especially since Edoardo Ballerini narrates them all!
I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author and narrator.
5 star Narration
My family thought I had just disappeared for a week inside the world of Robert McCammon. Couldn't put it down. Make sure you are on vacation before starting this one because if not work somewhere will be left undone. This story sends you twisting and turning every moment, captured completely by the desire to see the end of it, but dreading to see it end because it has so captured your imagination. Read it at your own peril. I am enraptured now and must read the series.
The narrator played an enormous part in my delight over this book. He brought each character alive with his creative genius and use of dialects, etc. Between the narrator and the genius of the author in creating word pictures of the characters, i thought I was listening to a movie.
I am a rural mail carrier so I spend a lot of time in my car everyday. Audible has made me look forward to going to work each day!
The narrator was exceptional. It was such a pleasant listening experience. I couldn't wait to get out on my mail route to listen to more of the story. I love the fact that the book was over 30 hours long. It could have been twice as long and I would have still been bummed when it ended.
The plot was very well devised.
Matthew Corbett was my favorite character.
I absolutely loved this book more than any other book that I have read or listened to. You will not be disappointed with this book!
In the beginning of this story I wasn't sure if I was going to want to finish it, but as the story built I became more and more invested. The lead character was annoyingly meddlesome, and the townspeople were exactly what I would imagine people of this time period to be like. I have read stories by Robert McCammon before and I honestly had forgotten what a great weaver he is.
This was my 87th Audible purchase yet my first review as the author Robert McCammon hooked me right from the start let alone the more than fantastic narration by Edoardo Ballerini. I'm hooked by both and will purchase more titles by this author who paints a picture with his palette of words. I will definitely look for titles including Ballerinis gifted acting skills and voice that brings the reader right into the scene as if a bystander. To Audible.com thank you for your daily specials as I probably would have missed this gem. Bravo marketing because now I'm headed in a new direction of adventure! Thank you!

This book turned out to be much more engrossing than I had expected. Although i knew the final destination early on in the book, i was intrigued by the route that would be taken. I was especially pleased that most of the work encompassed the solving of the mystery. The author is an engrossing story teller. Although a period piece, it retains the interest of a twenty first century reader,
Fantasically descriptive and beautifully narrated. I loved it. Listened to it every chance I got. Looking forward to the others in the series.
Author DeAnn DeVille
I would say it ranks in the high five.
The transformation of the storyline from a witches brew to a romance.
Gosh golly it's hard to say, there's so much action in this audiobook. I would say, the escape from the .....can't tell because it would ruin the story for someone.
The most interesting point that stands out in this book is you never know if Matthew really and truly loses his virginity or not.
No, actually the audio span was so long and the storyline so massive I enjoyed listening to this in intervals.
This was my first Robert McCammon novel however I see that his character Matthew has a series of novels where I believe he becomes a detective. I am certainly interested in reading up on young Matthew and seeing how things go for him from this point on in his life.
