book was gifted to me in exchange for my review.
your classic haunted house story. well written and preformed beautify. sure to leave you with the willies .
as a true horror fan I truly enjoyed this. nothing negative to say about this book except for maybe that it's a bit predictable.
this book is well worth your time. who doesn't love a GREAT haunted house story?
I love supernatural stories and haunted houses in particular. It's hard to be original these days but the real problem with this book is Little's choice of using bad flashback episodes FOUR times! They weakened the storyline and broke the cardinal rule --- never reveal too much about the monster. It will stop being scary. He did have one really creepy element - a card game. Hard to imagine, I know. But it was cleverly creepy. The performance wasn't that good. The narrator can't vary his voices enough.
Compelling, scary, spooky
"The Haunting" which was made into a movie. Because it had a similar theme.
Scared to Death
Well constructed story, even though it's not all that original.
I have not listened to other books by Bentley Little so I have no comparison.
I think the narrator did an excellent job. The character voices were distinct and easy to follow throughout the book.
Not really since it's about a haunted house not really much to draw from for inspiration.
I could have done without some of the language, that was my only hang-up on the book that kept me from rating it a little higher. I not easily offended by language but I also don't see a need for nearly every sentence to contain this type of language.
Held my interest, but I was surprised to learn it's more about a dysfunctional family. Good read, but may not be for everyone.
A well read woman is a dangerous creature.
Really weak story. Predictable and author just seems to toss this and that into it with no real connection to the story line. Even at 4.95 it was overpriced.
I liked this book and I would recommend it, especially if you are looking for a good ghost story that does not have a bunch of over the top hokey monsters. However on the down side, I do think that it was drug out a little to long but other than that it was good and pretty scary.
An avid reader who cherishes my time with a good book!
This was my first book by Bentley so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was engaging, lots of neat and very creepy original elements but overall I thought the ending was a bit of a letdown. It is a little bit graphic in parts but it fit the overall tone of the book. It does seem a bit far reaching, even for a novel about the supernatural and I found there were a few plot lines that didn't exactly come together for me. I felt like I was looking for some closure at the end that I never really got. However if you are looking for a spooky tale, this should do it for you. Not your typical ghost story.
This book was so poorly written - felt like a prompt style writing with plug in attributes. The historical content was so boring I fell asleep and I love historical fiction. The gratuitous aggressive sex scenes might have been appropriate if they clearly related to the story but they seemed to be there for shock factor and I found that insulting. I have nothing against a good raunchy read or a scene that is injected in a story to reveal or shock but even these scenes were utterly lacking in anything I could imagine to be interesting. I had to fight off sleep through most of the book. Boring!
No way. A bad book doesn't make a bad genre. That would just be silly
No but I did not have an issue with the reader. How can you blame a reader for a terrible read?
Most of them.
I wouldn't listen to The Haunted again--the story only barely scratches deeper than the surface of the ghost story it contains--but I would recommend it. Creepy, engaging, and a mostly satisfying end mean it's a good choice for a horror novel. There was a lot of potential in this story, and if it had gone just a bit deeper, it could have been really awesome.
