This author does not have a way with words; much of the story is told in cliches and mundane language: this happened, then this happened, etc. plot lines were started but left hanging; some intersting ideas, but not well developed- or well told. Somewhat disappointing.
I love supernatural stories and haunted houses in particular. It's hard to be original these days but the real problem with this book is Little's choice of using bad flashback episodes FOUR times! They weakened the storyline and broke the cardinal rule --- never reveal too much about the monster. It will stop being scary. He did have one really creepy element - a card game. Hard to imagine, I know. But it was cleverly creepy. The performance wasn't that good. The narrator can't vary his voices enough.
Great story line, exploring all characters from their points of view about the story. Great author and narrator. I was genuinely freaked out but couldn't stop listening.
I am a daily commuter, 1 hour each way. Audible rides shotgun with me every day. The time flies by when I am listening to a good book.
The first half was pretty good and set the atmosphere for a good scare. The part about James and the dirt was claustrophobic to say the least and very creepy. But then the story seemed to take a 180 degree turn and I found myself checking frequently to see how much time was left until the end. I felt like the author was beating me over the head with a political agenda and that added nothing to the story. Maybe the author was paid by the word or chapter. I hate to leave anything unfinished so I stuck it out but it was painful to complete. There were just too many sentences, paragraphs and chapters that seemed nothing but filler and wasted space. How do you spell relief? t-h-e-e-n-d!!!
Readers who enjoy Bentley Little stories
The story was unbelievable. We are asked to believe a family with two teenages experience horrifying events almost immediately after purchasing a house do not share these experiences with each other; instead they decide to keep it to themselves. After many terrifying experiences, it isn't until Chapter 25 before one of the parents utters those magic words "we have to move!" Unlikely as it may seem, the teens are texting but the two parents (one a website developer the other an attorney) do not text; rather they use their cell phones to call each other. The ending was ridiculous and completely disappointing. I got the feeling the author got tired of writing the story and came up with a preposterous ending just to be done with it.
Annoying, monotone voice. Couldn't tell who was speaking because the character voices were nearly the same.
A few scary moments but truthfully too few to save the book
What a creepy story.Dan Butler had a shaky start with the narration but quickly got into it & was awesome. He was very suspenceful. The story was filled with things that gives you goose flesh, make you want to check under your OWN bed.I was enthralled through out & entertained.Bentley Little brought together today's realities with the unbelievabilty of the paranormal.Demons, ghosts, creepy sounds, horrific nightmares.Things moving & people missing.Bones found & faces seen on a misty mirror.A family torn apart,a whole neighborhood disrupted.I loved this book. For those who love the paranormal & the MOST creepy, this is an awesome story.Highly recommend:)
If they enjoyed a spooky story yes, there were real moments of tension in this book and listening at night really gave me pause.
The father. I love belligerent, ignorant characters that get their just desserts.
As much i enjoyed this book, i wouldn't listen to it again. Why? because the story takes a bit too long and as it progresses you just don't feel the need to listen to it again.
Im not going to spoil anything but the memorable moments has to be the ending. It was both touching and selfish in my opinion, but unavoidable.
He was good. He was in character.
I would definitely take Megan, only because i think she needs someone to tell her everything will be okay. She seems really fragile.
In my opinion, this is a scary book. I couldn't help but keep looking over my shoulders cause i felt like someone was behind me when i was listening to this. I love horror books, and its hard to find something to scare me, but this.. well this is something else..
Beginning was slow
He is an OK reader - not someone I would seek out for other books.
One could be written - but I would not seek it out.
It was an OK book - nothing to send chills up my spine and it was VERY slow in the beginning. The middle to end part was the best part of the book. Glad I stuck with it - but would never make my MUST READ list for others.
