I like my horizons expansive and my details thorough. I enjoy reading about self-improvement, psychology, behavior change, technology, sociology, sci-fi, fantasy, history, cognitive science and other emerging sciences. I have a technology and business background and I'm an active gamer on most platforms available.
Poor narration ahead with lots of repetition. If you are familiar with neuroscience then you can skip this book.
This book is easy to understand and very informative on how the brain works. It explains how the left, right, lower and upper brain need to work together in order to live a happy, healthy life. The authors teach parents how to understand their children and respond in an appropriate manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works with children, especially all parents!
Siegel brings brain science to the dinner table. With easy-to-understand explanations, easy-to-teach approaches (can you say "cartoon drawings"?), and easy-to-implement strategies, this is a must-have for parents, teachers, and all who influence children.
Works in tandem with books like "The Connected Child" (for parents of adopted and foster kids), as well as Curt Thompson's "Anatomy of the Soul"
Don't miss out on the best brain science book for kids out there.
The book gives you options. Many constructive options that parents can use. Discipline is considered an opportunity to educate your children and let them acknowledge input to put to future use. I was raised with the typical "do it or else" I raised my oldest children that way, however, I realize that this way was uneducated and convenient. The younger children are experiencing the teachings of this book.
The breakdown of brain anatomy in simple terms of relation to our children at their various developmental stages.
The readings of these two made it easy to listen to and one continued on to the other with important information very smoothly. I would liken their reading to a very good foreign language program. I was dreading the anatomy lesson, however, this was simple, useful, and fun.
The endless moments of "A-hah" or "man, I could have done better."
Great Book. Must have for all parents. You owe it to your kids!!!!!!!!
YES. Over and Over! Because I want to pay attention to and reward upstairs thinking of myself and others. I want to be whole brained too:) Great advice and very practical applications. Loved all the examples:)
The book was well narrated but told me nothing new or "mind blowing". Basic behavior modification with brain development rolled in. Not bad information but nothing really useful.
Stages of development are related to actual cases to demonstrate what is happening in the brain as well as strategies for each stage.
I love anything by Dan Siegel. Check out Mindsight and Mindfullness and the Brain. Such mind blowing information and the guided meditations that comes with Mindfullness and the Brain are super useful.
It has lots of practical advice and relatable stories.
I can listen to the book with my son on the commute to work.
The idea of connecting first and then redirecting the behavior.
I really enjoyed the authors' reading of this book. The information and helpful examples of how you can help your child bridge his downstairs and upstairs brain were superb.
