This is actually two books in one, a great surprise to me. The narrator is fantastic! Book one is awesome and book two starts off kind of slow while the story develops but ends up being really good also. I will definitely listen to the whole series, and don't forget the short stories from this series also. They are very short but very good!
Story seemed to go on and on, but wasn't interesting to me. Got lost in all the political discussions, not enough plot to hold my attention.
Fun action romp
Most "good vs bad with the reluctant hero's stepping in to a world of intrigue and adventure" fit into the same bracket. The world is built really well and the characters are reliable in their roles. It was a little thin wrt how things are coming together but I dont think its meant to be a complicated story. If you are looking for a fun read this is it.
I think the dwarf is pretty cool.
Bad Boys with swords....
I have been through a couple of fairly heavy books and this is a light read which spans many ages. If you are looking for a fun story with entertaining characters this is it. If you are looking for a Tolkein like odyssey then its probably not for you...
The narrative was written on such a basic and simple level a 10 year old could read it it. I knew that the first book was going to be very basic, straightforward and light because of the previous reviews. However, I am sorry to say the second book was not much better. This book has the same stock characters that you find in any basic fantasy: wizard, dwarf, elf, charming swordsman and thief, damsel in distress... You get my drift. About as interesting and complex as a bowl of oatmeal. I don't understand all of the good reviews.
If you want a really good fantasy novel aimed towards adults try Peter V Brett or Joe Abercrombie.
I have only listened to the audio edition.
When Thrace, overcome by loss and grief confronts the beast (I cannot spell that creature's name).
Longtime fantasy fan who with a daily work commute of 1+ hour each way to and from work. I am always looking for a new series or author. Have listened to many excellent books the last few years. This was a new author and series for me and I am hooked. Characters are distinct and interesting - yes they are thieves but they are not despicable thieves. Secondary characters also are inviting and likable. I am ready to start Volume 2 :)
Great character development, fast paced, innovative, Loved it.
Liked it better than The Spirit Thief, but loved them Both!
This is perhaps my most favorite book to which I have listened so far! A book is only as great as the quality of the story. A great audio book is only as good as the way it is interpreted by its narrator. Michael J. Sullivan is one of the best fantasy writers out there and Tim Gerard Reynolds is one of the best audio performers in the industry. The combination of these two to present this story is fantastic!
I LOVE the humor and intensity of the story. The characters became so very real.
It is hard to choose between Hadrian and Royce because they really are the best of friends and I can't imagine one without the other in the story. But if I had to choose, it would be Hadrian. He's kindhearted, funny, a master of swords and weapons, and he doesn't take any crap from either Royce or Alric.
While there were times that I really wanted Hadrian to let Royce throw Alric in a river, the scene where Alric rides into battle was very moving. Without spoilers, I appreciated the depth that Sullivan gave his characters and the way in which Reynolds brought the whole scene to life.
This is a must-read: I travel a lot, it only took me two weeks to get through all 25 hours of this book! It made me laugh more times than I can count, it surprised me, riveted me, and even made me mad (mostly because I had reached the end and was in an area where I couldn't download the next one). If there are audio book awards, both author and performer should be win all the ones for which they are eligible!
Absolutely! The story was fun to listen to and the narrator was very good.
It was predictable but not Too predictable. Good wins but not in the ways you expect.
His character voices are absolutely perfect.
I laughed quite a few times
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good listen
I would focus on giving the story and characters more depth. The entire first book reads like it was written by a novice writer, while the second book remains shallow despite a few improvements.
No - it's not worth the time, even at 3x speed.
I enjoy many of the voices he created for the characters (which stayed consistent between books), and his pacing was good.
It inspired me to use my credits more wisely, and to not always assume I will agree with a high user rating.
I really wanted to give this series a chance, but it was too shallow for my liking. Compared to some of the great fantasy epics on here, this series felt flat and predictable.
Don't know haven't read the print version.
First time listener
Haven't heard him before. Great performance and I think he nailed the characters.
Good book, keen to try the others.
