The Wizard of Oz was one of my favourite books growing up, especially as a serial audiobook in Storyteller2. I was also quite excited to see Anne Hathaway as a reader. Unfortunately, she completely ruined this book reading. Her accents were so extreme, jarring and incongruous, her voices so unpleasant and grating that you find yourself constantly irritated by her despite this lovely story. After awhile I found I was simply dreading picking up my iPhone to listen to this so I stopped. Such a pity!
I cannot say that I prefer the audio to the written version of the story. I have always been partial to the written word. The audio was merely a means to listen to stories at work.
Anne Hathaway does an amazing job narrating this story. Her voice and intonations and the changes for each character really bring the story to life as you listen to her. This has always been one of my favorite stories. I will be looking to see if she narrates any other stories.
I have not listened to any of Anne's other narrations but I have watched several of her films. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to her tell the story of the Wizard of Oz. I will be looking for more stories she reads.
Absolutely. Anne Hathaway does an amazing job as narrator and performer. Her voices are delightful and consistent. A reviewer below had me nearly afraid to get this version, because of claims that she sounds like Marge Simpson when she does the Scarecrow, but I didn't find that to be true at all. I was expecting MARGE SIMPSON and got something a little (marge simpson)ish, but I wouldn't have connected it to Marge at all if someone hadn't suggested it.
I love audiobooks and this has just become my new favorite. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been a favorite book for years and hearing Anne Hathaway's reading of it brought it into a whole new realm of pleasure. She is absolutely brilliant with the voices, the emotion, the inflections, all of it. My grown daughter who was home for several days because she was sick listened to it twice. It's that good. This is what audiobooks, particularly of children's stories, should be.
I really enjoyed the story and the enthusiastic performance by Anne Hathaway.
I loved how my son, after listening to the story, asked for more.
I'm glad that I ignored those who complained about the narration of this wonderful story for children. Ms. Hathaway - who turned out NOT to be the one from The Beverly Hillbillies - did an absolutely delightful job with all the voices. She made it really fun, and a bit silly sometimes, just like I used to do back when my kiddies were small. It is a first-rate performance, with emphasis on performance.
The story of course, the performance of Anne is perfect for me:) The nuances and everything. I really appreciate it. It's easy to listen and very enjoyable.
The whole story is memorable of course
She's great. I did not know she knows a lot of voices; And nuances in the performance are spot on. I really enjoyed listening to her.
I just love this book:) and listening to it is a delight
I have ALREADY recommended the audio book to EVERYONE I know!
What a great performance!
She brought all of the characters to life!
Sometimes I get distracted while I'm listening to a book while driving or walking and start thinking about other things... with Anne Hathaway, I was HOOKED! I couldn't wait to get in the car so I could listen!
All of the other reviews are right, listen to THIS version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. You won't regret it!
Really loving audiobooks, this has been the year of the audio for me. Huge booklover all the way around from romance to horror. :)
I have watched the movie many times but never read the book. So I loved how the book has many more characters in it. It's a great story of not knowing just how much you can do with what you have. The scarecrow didn't need a brain as he was growing smarter every day. The Tin man might not had a real heart but he was full of heart when he saved the Queen of the field mice. The Cowardly Lion already had courage when it came time to help his new friends. :)
Hands down the Cowardly Lion!!
It made me laugh but mostly because of Anne Hathaway and her voices. :)
Ten times better than the movie I would recommend everyone try the book!
The story is good and the performance of Ann Hathway is breath taking
Several voices and perfect voice
