I want to feel good when I complete a story & am a little harsh on depressing ones. There are a few sad ones that I love but not many.
I thought that Jackson did a fantastic job narrating but I feel like the story was a little weak. I appreciate what Himes did with this but I just didn't feel like the story was deep enough. I enjoyed the story but it felt a little juvenile.
I generally love Samuel L. Jackson as a narrator but for some reason I found this performance to be below par and a bit unclear in spots. The material was good and I'd still recommend the book.
I thought the book was exceptionally well narrated. S. Jackson really transmits the feeling of the place and the chaos of the life style. The charachters's different personalities are portrayed with caring detail. The story seems light and fast but the performance is well worth the effort. Well Done!
I drive an average of about 1.5 hours every day. Since 2009 I've been a huge Audible fan thanks to This Week in Tech (TWiT.tv)
It's Samuel L Jackson, enough said. Good story, I'll be listening to the other Harlem books.
JACKSON!! and a close second was the old fella that owned the wagon.
Wasn't too thrilled about this book. Samuel L. Jackson was good but the story wasn't right for me. It failed to capture my attention.
rip-roaring period tale
Jackson's voicing of each of the characters was so well-done and spot-on, that one would have thought there is an entire cast performing.
I was unfamiliar with this author and bought the book because of the actor. Not everyone will find the dialect easy-going, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Grandma bibliophile! Audible books make reading with an active life possible.
Wow, I've never encountered a story by Chester Himes before and it was fast paced. I love Samuel L Jackson as a narrator and actor; he kept up without a hitch and made it so fun. I just felt sorry for our main character, Jackson, as things just kept falling apart in a bad way. It seemed like the poor guy just couldn't catch a break; sure, he put himself in some bad situations, but dang if things just didn't go haywire and he'd get the short end. He was caught up with some really bad guys, that somehow his junkie-brother, "Sister Gabriel" managed to save Jackson from in spite of himself, until the brothers horrible end - that was some of the best dialogue/monologue!! I never really did figure out if Jacksons girl was a user or just clueless. You will have to be the judge of that. I think clueless, just like him to an extent, at least I like to think so.
There was a lot of meat in this story to cover in a short review, but I had some serious laugh out loud moments, but a lot of I wish I could kick that crooked cops a**. I'm sure some of the story was a little over the top, the humor part mostly, but not the crooked cop bit back in the 50's. I'm not sure what I expected from the story, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I'm into fast action crime novels, and this one never stood still. Another thing I liked was that the "good bad guys" didn't always come out ahead. I hate when that happens, but in a story I like that too because it catches me unaware. The author takes me where I don't expect to go. (contradiction that I like/hate/like that, but it makes for good story telling - which is the reason I read/listen in the first place! Confused yet?)
This definitely deserved A-list status! Mr Jackson has a super fan in me, because of his talent. I love him in the movies, and when I listen to "Go the F**k to sleep!" I laugh harder every time. His cadence and tone are perfect, which makes the words so familiar to my heart. (snicker) That perfect pitch and rhythm came through in this book with this story too. I hope he reads more. I'll just look for him as narrator and listen, no matter who the author is. He'll make a bad story good and a good story great!
One of the top
Engaging..kept you entertained
I made me laugh
Liked the story.samuel made me feel like I knew the characters.
I felt the narration of this book was way over the top and way too dramatic. It took away from the story. I almost stopped listiening to it because it was so grating and annoying.
I did perservere and the book was worth while but what I remember most is how annoying the narration was instead of how good the story was.
nothing best,least the language
THE WAY HE PORTRAYS BLACK PEOPLE. All of us don't live these lives or know of these people.
Mr. Jackson , I feel is very hard to believe .He reads just like he talks and that is not good. My first time listen to him and my last time.
I did not finish this book it was to differ cult to hear Mr. Jacksons style of reading.
