middle of the pack.
I listened to it on a long drive and it made the time pass without really making my brain think too hard
since it's a story about a man, a hero, written in first person, it made it seem smoother, more real
I actually listened to it in two sittings, 4 hours driving there, 4 hours driving back.
old stories like this I find easier to listen to than read. Must be that it uses a different part of the brain. Not as hard to stay focused on the outdated writing style. I have a lot of classics in my library.
After seeing the movie and being intrigued by the storyline, I had to get this book. I was not disappointed with this read. Sure there were places and parts that were a little too unbelieveable or dragged out, but the ending was a solid right hook that left me with a lump in my throat.
I believe I will finish the series, good story overall. .
The narration of Scoot Brick on this last book was less than great. He just came across as so apathetic; this isn’t the story of Eeyore on Mars. I could use a little bit of life brought to the story.
Yeap, time well-spent because the historical value of this novel.
Not to any friend. The plot is good and interesting but the text is as old as it should be. It actually requires some effort of the reader to accept the style of the text. Also, it's important to have in mind that originally A Princes of Mars was published in pulp magazines in a serialized fashion, which make the time span of the story a little convoluted.
The narrator is not that good on this one. Sometimes I couldn't simple understand him, the fact that english is not my native language also doesn't help (altough I actually do understand english very well and had awesome experiences with others Audible books).
Yeap, already did.
Probably not, because of the reader.
Liked them equally.
Wow, did EVERY sentence in this book end with an explanation point .It made it difficult to listen to when the reader sounded like every word and sentence was going to end in an explosive action or comment.
No. I could only tolerate this reader for 20-30 minutes at a time. Too bad, the book and author are very good.
I'll keep my eyes out for this reader ,so I can avoid him .Sorry , Scott!
I am brutally honest. Popular, love everything they read, reviewers are scared to go neg. and risk their ranking. It's your money!!!
The Thok Whisperer
I can't believe I am going to say this, but Brick makes this a better book. I say that because I was once a Brick hater. I avoided his books for a couple of years. I think he has listened to all the criticism and has improved his work. This is my second review of this book at audible and the other narrator, I was not happy with. I have also read the book, but Brick is better.
THEY HAVE NO LAWYERS
I got a lot more out of the book this time and found it was a lot more complicated than I had originally thought. The world that Burroughs builds is exciting and creative. It had to be extremely exciting in the early 1900's. Yes, their is a lot of serendipity, things that just happen to go the way of the hero, things he over hears at the right time, etc. I would not let a modern writer get by with it, but this was a regular style of writing at the time.
I READ THE MIND OF YOUR DEAD MEN
There are a lot of different readings of this story and it is a classic. I would recommend this be the one you listen to.
I HAVE SPOKEN
Princess of Mars might be a rather tame, run of the mill fantasy story in this day and age, but when taken in the context from when it was originally published, this story becomes all the better. Scott Brick does a terrific job narrating (as always) Burroughs grand tale of Martian love and warfare.
I find it intriguing that this story was written in the early 1900's. This is the predecessor to modern sci-fi novels and it very entertaining. The speaker does an excellent job as well.
Really a good listen. So you park your probable - once the listen is underway who cares?! and get ready to be entertained!
no wonder so many try to make this into a movie. makes for a great listen - a great story.
throughly enjoyed this one! love, romance, war, discovery, adventure, what imagination for it's time.
