An easy listen and one of the most surprising books because I didn't expect from the title for it to have so much heart and wisdom sprinkled among the dick jokes. Absolutely my favorite non-fiction audiobook ever.
Hard to decide between the author or the reader on this one...I would have to go with Kevin Smith. His films have always been hit and miss with me but I have always admired and respected him for the way that he thinks outside the box and only uses convention when it makes sense. As someone in his industry he has always been one to keep an eye on because he tends to be way ahead of the pack.
It was hard to put down but very easy to get right back into the stream whenever I picked it up. One of the few books I could enjoy listening to in small pieces when necessary.
I love that he would occasionally go "off script" and embellish a topic he was reading. It made the book more personal and spontaneous and added extra value to the book. When I write my book I'm going to have Kevin Smith read it....in a studio this time.
Okay, if you aren't a Smithite, you might not get this book. But for those of us who love his movies, Smodcasts, and writing in general, this book is great. The pauses in narration of the book to add off the cuff are hilarious. It was nice to hear the author tell his story in his own words. Not the ghost writers some celebs have.
I would recommend this book to a friend, it isnt what I would consider a self help book. His performance is great, the way he talks to you is very engaging, almost as if he is in the room with you just having a conversation. The stories are inspirational for the most part but explain very little as to what part of how his personality helped him get there. He goes off on a few tangents but for the most part are still relevent to the story he is telling. His ego is a bit glaring in this book but considering its basicly a biography explaining how he got to be where he is its rather hard not to.
Nicely done and funny as hell, in a sad way sometimes. I nearly wet myself. It's a good listen for almost anyone, it's 'deeper' than you might think. Tough Sh-t is some of Kevin's best work yet, what a story! Thanks for the laughs, even if it was at the expense of the 'to fat to fly' guy...
Yes, if you have any interest in Kevin Smith, and indie film in the 90's, this is a good read (listen).
Smith has an excellent voice for reading, and listening to his words in his own voice, made me laugh out loud a lot of times, which probably turned a few heads in the train.
A very funny book with a good history lesson about indie film, and Marimax. If you've followed Smith for a long time, watched his live shows, and listened to his podcasts, be prepared for some repeats, and that is the only bad thing about the book.
So much to learn, so little time...
Everyone has people in their lives that can inspire, that tell great stories, people that can get away with the crazy sh*t that no one else can. You know, those people that walk the walk and talk the talk, the people that were not built with a "verbal filter" and will say anything. People who are self-deprecating to the extreme to just entertain their friends. We all have one or two of these people in our lives.
Mr. Smith, is not one of them, he is all of them...... and he swears a lot.
He is also funny.
Kevin Smith is a storyteller, plain and simple. I both laughed out loud and cried multiple times throughout the book as Smith candidly regaled his most happy times, and his darkest moments. If you're a fan, read this book - be you an aspiring filmmaker or not. If you're not a fan, it's unlikely you will pick this up, but if you do, it will make you a fan. Caution: you will never look at Bruce Willis the same again!
Absolutely would recommend this book to a friend because its laugh out loud funny.
This book is narrated by Kevin Smith himself. He gives you a few off the hook comments on his life and a look into how he got to where he is now. We all die screaming, so we better come to terms with the tough sh-t.
This is in my top 3 favorite audio books. Listening to Kevin was great. Master story teller.
Hearing the inside world of his movie career and also that Bruce Willis is a jerk.
Excellent conversational tone and great storytelling.
I would love to hear Kevin Smith read another audiobook for audible. I know he wrote this one so it would be rare for him to read another author but he has a natural talent.
Absolutely fantastic. Smith comes off as very honest and genuine. He exudes charm and charisma. I listened to the entire book in one sitting. A definite must read/listen too.
I enjoyed the entire book, but the most memorable part for me is the review his daughter wrote for him. It is incredibly sweet and touching.
His sense of humor really makes the listen more enjoyable. I love when he deviates from the page.
"Get ready to lose your SH*T"
This book is truly inspiring and funny as hell! I loved it!!!!!!!
