Mother, book fanatic and librarian
Yes, I was so happy to find a new author (for me) that created the same type of world and feeling as The Lord of the Rings (albiet on a lighter level). A lite mix of magic, castles, horse riding and unexpected events. Yet most of all I enjoyed that the main character is a young lady, facing self doubts, fears and unexpected events, yet approaches each obstacle with undaunting honor, and a lack of harsh, crude language or love/lust scenes.
The Kris Longknife Series. Another series of a young lady facing adversity although in space not on land.
I love her different accents. It is always a pleasure and a shock to hear them.
After being expelled from her boarding school when she stood up against the school's wealthy bullies, Carrigan finds her escape from her father's wrath a bit more difficult than expected and her life taking a completely unexpected and surprising ride.
A great series for people who like clean wholesome books with positive outcomes
I like books
I believe this book was probably written for young adults. Probably girls in their teens. I am in my 50's so I'm probably not the target audience. I overall enjoyed the book. The beginning and middle were good. The ending, around the last 2 - 3 hours dragged for me. I was really glad when it finally ended. I had thought I'd listen to the sequel as I was listening to the beginning and middle but after the ending I decided I had enough. Also, I'm not much of a sci fi fan so I guess I had my quota for the time being.
The wild ride.
The wild ride was the shortest and most unusual aspect to this story.
The voices were supurb. And the way she would caugh or add a moan really made it a more believable experience. Great acting!!
The first part of the book was hard to hear about. It seemed the main character couldn't last five minutes on her own before something aweful would happen to her. I couldn't understand why the author was trying to squeeze all these experiences into the first third of the book. It was just a little much. But the author recovered in my openion so I gave the book **** (4 stars) because of the rushed beginning.
finally coming face to face with the king
Still trying to why I chose this book but I really enjoyed it.
I do not know how this book gets high stars on Amazon.com. The story reads as one trope after another, with no sense of originality. The encounters seems random and I often felt like their was no reason behind the progression of the story.
All together I think this book should have been presented in the juvenile section, for teen readers as opposed to adults.
Crown of Shadows
Honestly it was a lackluster sort of novel. It was a book to pass the time listening to but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.
I love to read. I also love to write. I'm a harsh critic and very, very, very rarely give five star reviews to anything. Three stars for me is an average representation of literature and not a bad review by any stretch.
Average for story. Above average for narration.
Most interesting: The development of Kerigan as a character.
Least interesting: The way I never felt Kerigan was in any real danger and that there would be a happily ever after ending.
Did well portraying the various characters.
This book is targeted at teens (very young teens at that) with no previous exposure to fantasy and will not satisfy any true sci-fi/fantasy fan. The story is very predictable, schematic and built entirely on old-school (Tolkien) fantasy clichés. The characters are all black-and-white and do not raise any stronger emotions in the reader, the plot simply boring after a time. I could easily put away the audio book for days and did not feel any urge to continue.
The narrator is a bright point of this audio book. I finished it mostly because I liked the performance of Ellen Archer.
I REALLY ENJOY THIS TYPE OF BOOK, BUT JUST COULDN'T GET INTO THIS ONE. PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THE 2ND BOOK IS BETTER, I'M NOT GOING TO FIND OUT . THERE HERE ARE MANY OTHER "FISH IN THE SEA" FOR ME TO INVESTIGATE, I'M OLD AND TIME IS PRECIOUS. I WAKE EVERY DAY WITH THE THOUGHT THAT SOMETHING WONDERFUL IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. SOMETIMES IT DOES!!!!!!!!!
I HAVEN'T GIVEN IT ANY THOUGHT AND WON'T WASTE MY TIME DOING SO
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER
