Long time listener, road warrior and crime detective fan. Himes, Parker, Patterson, Crais, Grafton ....
I'am a big Crais fan and greatly looked forward to this book. The performance was screwed up as they failed to read the chapter numbers. I was on road traveling and kept thinking I was missing chapters. I even wrote them down when they were stated and reversed a couple times when somewhere skipped. The way the book is written (jumping around) made the readers technique even worse. Maybe the reader could have said something at beginning of recording about skipping the chapter numbers. In the end totally ruined my enjoyment of this book.
There is a big gap in this recording. Chapter 2-3 are missing!

I am an avid eclectic reader.
Luke Daniels did a good job narrating this story. Crais not only told an interesting story but address an important issue for the country and a big problem for CA, AZ, NM & Tx. Covering such a violent topic the usual humor of Cole was toned down. Every one should read this book and think about how to solve this societal problem.
Right now audio editions are my favorite.
If you enjoy and like Robert Crais and Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books - then ENJOY
We love Cole and Pike and read everything Crais writes about their adventures. Now that Crais has decided to headline Pike in the latest books, we would only wish he would "humanize" Pike a little more. Cole is funny, self-deprecating, compassionate, but Cole can be ruthless, too. He's a well-rounded character. Pike seems to be a little too cold, removed, not as entertaining. Not to say that the book is not great; it is. I'd just like Pike to get a girlfirend or something that makes him more human.
Read the book. It's very entertaining.
I would have to say that this book was one of the better joe and Elvis books I have read. I would have to agree with other people on it does seem short. It may only feel that way because it's so good. In fact it's length is about the same as all the other books in this series.
Luke's does a fantastic Elvis Cole. I seems natural and great to listen too. The joe pike is a little strained but still very good. He would be a great person to perform all new books in this series.
Oh yeah, too bad my ride to work only lasts 40 minutes.
It's a must get. It's a shame the author takes so long to create new books in this series.
Other Crais books
Very clear and realistic
Pike pulling the Jiminy Cricket out of his pocket.
Loved the narrator for this book. Thought his voicing of different characters were spot on.
No matter where you go, there you are.
More like a short story that ran too long. Hardly a twist or wrinkle to hang your sleuth hat on. Not much on suspense either. Not only Pipe on the job, but this maniac Stone on a rampage too!
Saw it coming a mile away. Bad guy turned out to be kind of a wuss. Not Crais' best work.
