Books make the world a better place
The narrator was the primary disappointment but the story wasn't that spectacular either.
I think I'm going to avoid Maria V. Snyder, unless her writing skills improve drastically.
Gabra Zackman, the narrator, is awful. She does not sound like a 20 year old and her voice is more masculine than feminine. Most of the narration was either unemotional or monotonous. It annoyed me that the narrator ended sentences by slightly raising her voice and making the story sound like a string of questions. For me, the narrator diminished what little power the story had...she made the story sound like baby-talk.
I thought I was listening to a children's book. First the narrator and then the story. The people, places, descriptions (actually lack of) are superficial, dull and barely interesting. The underdeveloped characters are simple, flat and not very memorable. On one hand Avry is introduced to us as one who is condemned to death because in her world such healers have been accused of spreading the plague. Avry heals people and actually welcomes other people's pain and injuries; but on the other hand, a deadly illness is just as deadly for her too. So here's the question. What's the real benefit of being a healer if Avry can only heal minor/healable illnesses...because these people could heal on their own and probably would anyways!?!Then there's Avry's love interest, Kerrick, who is a total jerk. He backhands, starves and exposes our heroine to the elements in the hope that some cold weather and shivering will break her will...really!?! (rolling my eyes). I do admit it...I am so sorry I purchased this audiobook.
maria v snyder never has ceased to captivate my attention when I listen to her intricately entwined plots unravel. in my opinion, she is a genius, and gabra zackman is a wonderful narrator-giving each character their own soul as their personalities jump from the page . an excellent pair, a rare find, and I'm lucky to have came across this audio book :)
I love comedy, drama, murder, and mystery....a problem I have is staying awake while reading....so now I listen to my favorite stories.
"Touch of Power" is a wildly Enthralling Fantasy with a wickedly dark sense of humor & heart stoppingly suspenseful plot twists! B-)
The characters are likeable and the heroine strong. Zackman is a great narrator. This story both goes nowhere and somewhere all at the same time. That being said, I'm looking forward to what happens next.
I loved the story and the characters. it had everything I look for in books, a strong female lead, magic, action and romance that doesn't dominate the whole story. it was great. also a special thanks to the narrator, her voice was very nice to listen to and the way she did each character made them feel even more unique then they already were.
I bought this on one of the sales. Thought I would check out something different from my normal crime, mystery novel taste. This was a good listen and kept my attention. It had a plot, a little romance, and some mystery.
Not sure, there were a couple.
No, I haven't, and yes, I would listen to her again. She had a pleasant voice that was easy to listen to.
No not really. There were points where I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened, but it wasn't a book that I HAD to get to the end. Not that it wasn't good, but I took my time listening to it. There are some books that I Can't wait to find out what happens, this was more of a leisure reading, for me anyway.
I've accumulated a library of almost 300 books and this is one that I will listen to again someday. There are some that are just DUMPed into will not listen again file.
I loved the story.
It was exciting from the begining and never got bored.
Happy that there is already the second book to this series.
