Yes with reservations. The story line is an old one - remember the old tv show land of the giants, where people were shrunk down so that blades of grades eemed like redwoods? If so, this story is an updated version. The 'small people' are graduate students in different areas of biology. The most interesting part of the story is when they use their knowledge of biology to their favor.
The rest of the story requires a large suspension of belief. The book devolves away from clever use of biiological knowledge to an action adventure story.
Could have been much better but it is an entertaining read for those like a 'light' science fiction book.
Under circumstances. I doubt that I would go out of my way to buy it as soon as it came out, but I would likely put in on my list to eventually get to.
He was a good narrator but I found nothing that made me feel was a great narrator nor did he have any traits that I disliked...he does not make or break the book.
I'd wait for the braodcast version.
As an active / outdoor guy, I love listening to audiobooks while trail running, hiking, etc.
Too many loose ends - Crichton wouldn't have left soo many holes (I'm sure he would have loved to finish it)
predictable, loose ends
The book is definitely worth listening to - especially if you are a Crichton fan. But its definitely not his best. Lower your expectations a bit and you'll be fine.
Yes, this book I would listen to again. Although I know the ending, this books is so scary and so awful in its insides, it's just one of the top books ever, and over 75 years I've read and listened to plenty of books.
It's so scary in that its something that really could happen in our lifetime. A wonderful story that asks us to believe whether or not it could happen in our lifetime. Awesome listening.
He is very smooth in his narration. He can make you feel that you are part of this book. He is wonderful, so good that I would pick HIS narration over many of the readers who miss the mark in tone and and in creating a world that's truly possible.
Is this our world to come?
I'm unable to read books any longer, but I know a good listen when I hear it. The author and narrator are both on the same page. You won't be disappointed.
I am a big fan of Michael Crichton. I love the way he makes his listener examine the real science of a subject that popular culture has ignored. This is not his best work but it is still an engaging story. What spoiled it for me was the bad preparation the narrator did before recording this book. The story is set in Hawaii and therefore full of Hawaiian names and places. The narrator mispronounced and over pronounced almost every Hawaiian word. Admittedly, I am a long time Hawaiian resident and use many of these words daily. However almost any tourist who has been to Hawaii knows that the main street through Waikiki is pronounce
same as above
??? Good voice and good characterizations. Needs better prep on location
The premise and the writing.
This is the first audio book that I could not finish listening to. The narration is good but the story is so implausible that it is just silly. And I’m a Crichton fan. I have loved all of his previous books because the stories, while being futuristic, were plausible and even prescient, but Micro is no Prey or Jurassic Park. Add to that the frequently trite writing, especially the dialog, and I found the well-narrated book to be unlistenable.
I no longer live in Worcester. I now live in Brooklyn, NY.
What a wonderful movie this will make! I can imagine the images, but special effects could go wild. I'm tempted to say how believable this micro-world became to me.
This isn't so much a review as a warning. The author(s) take an exquisite delight in the gory details - especially of the deaths of several of the characters. If you're squeamish, you might want to pick another book.
Otherwise, the book was entertaining and a bit thought-provoking. You'll never look at your lawn in the same way ever again!
Nothing, this should never have been published.
Not this author.
Nobody could narrate this piece of trash.
The entire book
Don't waste your money or time. The plot is ridiculous. The dialogue is stilted and insipid; no one talks like this.
The first chapter is very dry but PLEASE get through it. This book is absolutely amazing. I was literally yelling NO, DON'T! by myself in my vehicle while listening to this book. SO good!
