I'm not a fan of Robert McCammon's other works but this was actually one of the best audio books I've heard in a long time. The author does a great job of setting each scene and all of the characters are well developed and interesting. There is a lot of symbolism in this story and it would be equally as entertaining for a 15 year old as it would be for a 45 year old. Totally worth the credit, I would love to see more audio books by this voice actor.
a must read
I will recommend this book to everyone. It was entertaining from the beginning to the end.
Absolutely! I plan to listen to it again immediately! It is rather long, but it keeps your interest. So many times I wanted to go to the end of the story just to find out what was going to happen. But as hard as it was I did not. It is a complete story, not the kind that leaves you wondering "so what happen to the people?" The writer Robert McCammon did a wonderful job. Cheers to him on this fine story.
I enjoyed the whole book.
Sister - the story was about Swan and she is a lovely character, But Sister and Josh are the story.
Can wait to see what else this writer has written - hope they are all as great as this story.
Definitely, it was very intriguing
The characters were very interesting
I think his voice was very rich when it was Josh, I could almost imagine what he'd looked like
How the town got together after being so fearful & almost untrusting
Swan Song did not disappoint me at all
I loved the story, from start to finish. I would call it a improved version of Stephen King's the Stand. It is an older book and is a little dated with its cold war implications.
Not a must read, but I still would recommend it.
I'm a long haul truck driver. For me there's no better way to knock down the miles than with a good audiobook.
Ive read this book 4 times since it was 1st published. being a truck driver and I drive 3 or 4 thousands miles a week, it just kept me smiling all day.
I believe besides Swan herself, the wrestler will be my pick. Then again the woman with the talisman would be a good pick too.
not Scott Brick or the like.
her(Swan) meeting the boy, I dont know, Ive read this book several times, the whole book moves Me.
I would recommend this to everyone.
All really good, but Sister is a mean SOB!
Josh the strong
The writing is decent, but there is a heavy religious theme that just got on my nerves for some reason. Other readers may enjoy this.
He's a good narrator. It was the story that was the problem for me.
The story is not bad, but I found the heavy religious theme bothersome. If you don't mind that or are looking for that kind of story then this would probably be very engaging.
The first parts of the book are quite excellent. The author conveys the build up of nuclear war, it's unfolding, and it's aftermath very vividly. The first third of the book is very enjoyable, but that enjoyment did not last for me.
Everything that happens after that is very predictable and has all the melodrama of a soap opera. The characters become completely one-dimensional as does the story. The antagonist are pure evil and the protagonist are benevolent forces for good. Of course there is a showdown between the two and supposedly the protagonist have their backs against the wall and it seems like evil will prevail. It doesn't, of course, and you never have a feeling that it might because halfway through the book you realize exactly what kind of story this is......one that you've read and seen a million times. The protagonist are able to defeat the "bad guys" at the last second (literally) through the power of love, magic, faith, and god. Everybody lives happily ever after.
Been there, done that, nothing to see here, move along.
The production was good and the narrator does a great job for the most part. The only problem I had with the narration was the voice he used for one of the main characters. It sounds like a Jerky Boys character and gets incredibly annoying to listen to. I found myself hoping that character would die so I wouldn't have to listen to that voice anymore. :)
Overall the story has some great moments in it, but they can't make up for the fact that in the broader sense of the story the overall plot is just another good vs. evil melodrama.
The battle between good and evil reminded me of a Stephen King novel
Josh was my favorite as a protector and great character. Everyone needs a Josh in their life.
