Original and engaging. Couldn't stop listening. This book was very unique in plot, but its heart is in its characters, which is what made it so good.
I knew nothing about this book when I bought it--I was attracted to the title. I love vampire books, however, this is NOT one. It is a family story about a crazier-than-usual family. I don't want to give anything away, but nothing is quite as it seems over and over. The reader is terrific. I laughed, smiled, cried, and all around enjoyed The Family Fang. Kevin Wilson is funny and profound.
I liked this book a lot! But the parents, as parents, were very unsettling. Even though I really liked this book, I am still undecided if it would not have been a stronger and better ending to NOT have included the final chapter. Before the final chapter, the story built up to such a poignant and emotionally powerful place. The resolution of A & B???s lives in the last chapter, although forward looking and hopeful, at least for me, dulled the emotional ???edge??? created in the climactic scene.
This might appeal to those who can find humor in oddball characters and dysfunctional family dynamics.
Narration was really good, and was the only reason I stayed with the story. Therese Plummer can change character with her voice, and she made each character distinctive.
Just the narration.
Maybe someone else would enjo it. For me it was way too cutesy and trying to be eccentric.
Probably a book by Margot Livesey or Lionel Shriver
Thr narrator was not at fault for my overall bad review. She did the best she could do with this story.
The narrator. I didn't listen past the first hour, though.
Just not my style. I bought it becase it was $.95. I love that Audible offers refunds. It makes me unafraid to try a new author.
Yes, I think I would, and that's saying a lot because I almost never listen to or read books a second time.
It's actually quite unique. On the one hand it is obviously absurd, but it never leaves the realm of the just-barely-possible. You are constantly thinking - yes, there ARE people like this, and they MIGHT do things like this. It's not like someone waking up as a cockroach...And, despite their overall weirdness, you grow to like and care about each of the characters.
What I actually liked best was that there were several instances where I thought I had reached the end of the book - only to discover that it was another plot turn and the story continued to yet another fabulous entertaining chapter.
I almost didn't buy this book because it sounded too weird. What a mistake that would have been. This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read, EVER. You can read it on many levels, think about it - or not - be surprised and entertained and moved. Trust me. Get this one.
Follows the lives to two dysfunctional siblings from a very dysfunctional family, as their lives fall apart, and then they put themselves back together. The story of the siblings is depressing (and it's hard to believe how stupid some of their actions are as their lives fall apart), and then the later section where their lives come back together seems somewhat trite and unbelievable.
Quite an innovative story. I was left wanting more at the end. The ultimate tale of parents' that loved making art more than they loved their offspring. An odd form of art also!
Not many like these
Made me think.
I'm going to put The Family Fang in the top 1/3 of my huge number of audiobooks listening.
I'd say Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - family dynamics portrayed with empathy, imagination, and magical realism.
I have not listened to Therese Plummer before - and she is just wonderful. Possibly the best narrator I've heard so far. VERY impressed.
Yes - but I listen to my audiobooks in the car and while at the gym. Almost never in one sitting - unless I have a long road trip.
I really appreciated the originality of this book - and the first rate narration.
Unusual, twisted, fascinating
Geek Love - also deals with a very unusual family in which the parents' motives are questionable.
Great voices for the characters - they really came to life.
Buster - he's an odd, lovable character.
