I love this series and Ms. Adele is the perfect voice. The only complaint I have is, why aren't the rest of Ms. Brook's books and shorter work also on Audible? I'd buy them!
I listened to the vast majority of the book but didn't find myself excited to listen to any more. I kept thinking that there was so much back story, world building and character development that it would get "on with it," but alas. The author was a good story teller with a plodding, rambling story.
The author was inventive in her descriptions of the mechanical devices in her world. I felt here world building was very good but, again, the plot just didn't move along fast enough for me. I so wanted the author to set up the fanciful world then go on the grand adventure but I felt the adventure wasn't grand.
Stupid,hard to understand and follow
Sorry worse book I listen to. I kept at thinking it might get better but alas it go worse
Love historical and paranormal romances with smart, imperfect people who against all odds find love when they are not looking for it.
A lot of detail and characters in this fictional England made it difficult to follow. The main characters are done well, their story is compelling but gets bogged down in describing detail. It is difficult to distinguish when characters are thinking or talking, the narrators voices are simular. Good story in the end, but not great.
This made me very happy. I already was a very big fan of the stories after having read it but Ms. Adele performance was top of the line. It has me wanting to listen others it the series.
WTF?! I am no prude by any means, let me start there. The framework of the story was excellent. HOWEVER, the book reads like a series of porn episodes...I mean hard-core porn. It starts out as a woman who is forced upon by a 'hero'...the woman is raped, plain and simple. The story goes on making this into making this victim fall in love with her rapist. The author should be ashamed, and the female narrator should have stopped when she realized what was going on and quit the gig.
The narrator was OK. The story's framework had great potential, but the author ruined it by turning into something that should be in Penthouse.
XXX WARNING...no exaggeration. You had better not have this book playing in the presence of any children or older people with any degree of morality.
Say something about yourself!
I like this lady's style. She writes fascinatingly real characters inhabiting a strange otherworld. She always draws me in.
Mina Wentworth is an English Detective Inspector and a damn good one. Her distinct features tells of her Horde heritage which keeps everyone except her family at arm's length. Summon to a case at the Iron Duke's residence, she finds herself catching his unsolicited attention. The Iron Duke is relentless in his pursuit of Mina, but when his actions bring her terror, he steps back and allows her to come to him on her own terms.
Steampunk genre always feels like you're thrown into the mix, grasping desperately at any detail in order to navigate your way through a story you just happened upon. This was no different. There is a lot happening in this book, so in audio form it sometimes can be difficult to get the full grasp of all the details in the story especially since it is harder to scroll back if you miss something. However, when all was said and done, I didn't end up with too many holes in the story because of the intricate descriptions of scenes, mechanics, and characters that helped shape the story. Also the narration was superb and that aids a lot in character distinction in a scene.
I really enjoyed this tale. The world building is solid and the characters are well constructed. The action sequence keeps the readers on the edge and filled with intrigue while the romance is both heartbreaking and tender.
I am off to read the next book in the series and I suspect, I will enjoy it even more than the first.
Narrator: Faye Adele
Excellent performance. The pace, tone, character distinction, and accents were spot on in what I imagine this fabulous world and the characters in them would sound like. Adele is easy to listen to and consistent in her readings.
The first chapter is a little dense with details, but stick with it. She has a lot information to convey for you to understand the story, but once she gets past that, you are off and running! Its a really interesting world with all the wonderful little steampunk details to make you smile. And the sex, good heavens!
I liked everything about this from start to finish. I hope the rest of them are this good. It moved fast. The world building is good and I really enjoyed both the story and the characters.
The narrator was wonderful.
