Mina Wentworth is an English Detective Inspector and a damn good one. Her distinct features tells of her Horde heritage which keeps everyone except her family at arm's length. Summon to a case at the Iron Duke's residence, she finds herself catching his unsolicited attention. The Iron Duke is relentless in his pursuit of Mina, but when his actions bring her terror, he steps back and allows her to come to him on her own terms.
Steampunk genre always feels like you're thrown into the mix, grasping desperately at any detail in order to navigate your way through a story you just happened upon. This was no different. There is a lot happening in this book, so in audio form it sometimes can be difficult to get the full grasp of all the details in the story especially since it is harder to scroll back if you miss something. However, when all was said and done, I didn't end up with too many holes in the story because of the intricate descriptions of scenes, mechanics, and characters that helped shape the story. Also the narration was superb and that aids a lot in character distinction in a scene.
I really enjoyed this tale. The world building is solid and the characters are well constructed. The action sequence keeps the readers on the edge and filled with intrigue while the romance is both heartbreaking and tender.
I am off to read the next book in the series and I suspect, I will enjoy it even more than the first.
Narrator: Faye Adele
Excellent performance. The pace, tone, character distinction, and accents were spot on in what I imagine this fabulous world and the characters in them would sound like. Adele is easy to listen to and consistent in her readings.
The first chapter is a little dense with details, but stick with it. She has a lot information to convey for you to understand the story, but once she gets past that, you are off and running! Its a really interesting world with all the wonderful little steampunk details to make you smile. And the sex, good heavens!
I liked everything about this from start to finish. I hope the rest of them are this good. It moved fast. The world building is good and I really enjoyed both the story and the characters.
The narrator was wonderful.
THERE IS NOT ONE THING THAT I DID NOT LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK. THE STORY, THE ROMANCE, THE ACTION, THE DIALOGUE EVERTHING. VERY WELL WRITTEN
I AM RELATIVELY NEW TO STEAMPUNK SO I HAVE NOTHING TO COMPARE IT TO.
I HAD LISTENED TO A LORRAINE HEATH BOOK NARRATED BY ADELE AND WAS SO IMPRESSED BY HER PERFORMANCE THAT FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN OVER 700 AUDIO BOOKS PURCHESED I WENT LOOKING FOR OTHER BOOKS BASED ON THE NARRATOR ALONE. SINCE SHE DOES NOT HAVE MANY I DECIDED TO GIVER THE IRON DUKE A TRY EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT THINK I WOULD LIKE IT. L. O. V. E. D IT AND HAVE PURCHESSED THE REST OF THE AUDIOBOOKS .
THIS BOOK COVERED ALL EMOTIONAL REACTIONS THE ROMANCE WAS GREAT
THIS BOOK WILL TURN YOU ON TO STEAMPUNK AS NO OTHER WILL. AT 63 I AM NOW INTO STEAMPUNK ALL DUE TO FAYE ADELE.
The plot was interesting. Easy to get into. I rated this 4 stars because the sex scenes derailed the story. Also, the Iron Duke was a jerk so his "you're in my bed whether you like it or not" didn't go well with me. I loved Mina. She was so cool...her heroism was just all in a day's work. I think the Kindle follow-on should have been part of the main story. I would have rated it higher.
The whole Steampunk world was very original. I liked the plot (s).
I thought she was great and made the story.
No. I wanted to fast forward through the sex scenes because it took away from the story progression. One minute you have exciting action, the next you come to a screeching halt for the sex. I don't have a problem with sex scenes but they were overly wrought and significantly slowed the pace of the story.
Heroine, def kick butt.
First Adele's book
The storyline took me by surprise.
Good book, stick with it till the end.
