The narrator speaks a bit slow, and it is in some way taking the tempo of the Baldacci books down. But it might be the best way to get the atmosphere of the remote villages he likes. I really like the way you feel you get to know the places and people, but compared to the other action thrillers, Baldacci is slow moving.
Story starts off interesting, and accelerates all the way, with a cooldown after the major action half an hour before finish.
I enjoy the Baldacci books, they feel a lot deeper than Brad Thor or Vince Flynn.
John Puller is a great creation by Baldacci. Can't wait for the third novel to come out
Many twists and turns. Believable story line and consistent characers.
Listen to it
This was my first book by David Baldacci, but it won't be the last. I was sick and out of work and listined to over 1/2 of the book in one day. Then I finished it the next.
There was no time that I lost interest in the story.
I don't usually listen too a book twice.
Puller is a good character. Reminded me alot of Jack Reacher
Yet it was a book you look forward to listening too
Excellent Characters and very very good readings by Ron McLarty & Orlagh Cassidy.
Plot kept you going although it was bit slow developing is a few spots. Enjoyed this so much we got others by this authour with these characters
I am a retired high school computer teacher. After years of tech reading, I have given up reading for listening while I woodworking.
Very good beginning but be sure to get the next book in the series. There is a fabulous and compelling flow. Don't argue, it's only money!!
I was a Reading Specialist by trade , but mostly I'm a wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and servant to four cats.
Great surprise ending.
Sam Cole. She was a small-town cop who had to deal with the interference of military cops on her turf. She handled it with class and sass.
I can't choose-both are outstanding!
The ending took me by surprise and that's saying a lot.
My only disappointment is that all of Baldacci's protagonists are basically the same character. John Puller is just a younger version of Oliver Stone. Great story, but not a lot of imagination regarding main character's background as a military operative.
Among the top. I would listen to it again.
There wasn't a single moment. It was just the overall character of John Puller. He was expertly done and is very memorable and now one of my favorite characters along with Mitch Rapp and Odd Thomas.
Many and this is up there with his best.
The fact that there were 2 voices reading the book made it more realistic than a single reader trying to emulate multiple voices.
Plot was interesting - lots of twists and turns - good action and the guilty party difficult to pick out.
Not heard them before.
No extreme reaction - plot was interesting enough that I kept coming back to it - only listened on trips to work and when walking so no long stretches of listening.

Puller MIGHT be a decent character if JACK REACHER wasn't already created, and also that Reacher is a better character who is developed MUCH better, and I don't know about anyone else but I can't tell from the tone of the narrator and the way Puller questions his suspects he reminds me of that other character that Baldacci made up in the book 'The Innocent'
I did not make it past the first portion of this book because I just could not get into this particular character... he seemed to me more like a foresic expert verse part of a military investigator, MP like...
I don't think I gave this book the fair amount of time to finish because the reviews and the character PULLER... I mean jeeez, did he have to choose a name that was also a friggin action.... REACHER.... Lee Child said he came up with that name when he was food shopping and his wife suggested he could become a professional 'REACHER' after grabbing a can of food out of her reach... COME ON BALDACCI, The Camel Club ain't half bad, but I mean between Flynn, Baldacci, Thor, Child, and many others... none match up to MITCH RAPP... but in this instance Baldacci handicapped me by using a character that was waaaay too much of a carbon copy of Jack Reacher... so like I said he really weasn't given a fair shake, but its like that short african kid who used to yell 'whatchu talkin'bout Willis??'
