Big fan of Maberry. This, however seems to be thrown together from his early notes on the zombie genre. The story is pretty entertaining, but is far from a well thought out work. With regard to the narration, I wished and wished and beg and pleaded that one of the zombies would eat the narrator. After an hour or so of listening I was ready to quit. Then I thought maybe he was taking a1950`s campy sci-fi approach to the telling. Didn't take. It's like listening to 13 hours of Johnny Depp doing Ed Wood voice-overs. Amazingly the male characters sound more feminine than the female characters when in distress.I'm sure Mr Dufris is a talented performer, but he sabotaged this novel with an incredibly over the top performance. Finally, in a hurricane force wind humans tend to have balance and aim issues. Heard a lot about how terrible the storm was in the story, but the big winds didn't seem to affect the living or living dead.
The pleas for help via satellite uplink and social media were awesome.
Not at this juncture. Don't in any way understand this performance. WAY OVER THE TOP!!!
Please explain why the performance was so ridiculously slow and over dramatic.
A more entertaining story, not so many mistakes in the writing, and not so much exaggerated drama in the telling.
A little... I'll need to be a little more careful when selecting from this genre.
The reader would need to be able to convey a lot of drama, though Mr. Dufris went a bit overboard.
There was a very interesting and more realistic idea of how the "zombies" were made. There was some real potential there.
This is one of the very few books that I've just had to stop listening to. While many authors make mistakes now and then, this one was particularly bad. I finally gave up after the "cordite smell" in the air after a gun was discharged. Cordite hasn't been used for a very, very, long time. Expert marksmen who were supposed to be intelligent were "double tapping, one to the body, one to the head" zombies long after they knew that body shots were useless. Safety glass can't cut you after it is broken. The list goes on and on....Toward the end of the book I just didn't care about a single stereotypical character. They were predictable and shallow. They all annoyed me.The entire story was uneventful, poorly written, and the narrator's over the top dramatic voice was just too much.
I only gave this book 2 stars because for the first time in my experience the narration was so bad I think it may have colored my opinion of the story. If you have ever heard someone reading a book to a group of children, you know, the really animated reading that stresses many words to add entertainment to the book, that is what this is like. It's a bizarre mix of a goory story with little kid narration, I couldn't take it. I had to skip some parts when it became too annoying. I'm usually not that critical of narration but it so reminded me of little kids books that I found myself rolling my eyes at the over inflection moments of which there are far far too many.
The story takes an unnecessary time getting started so you may want to ship the first 25%. The rest is, well, painfully cliché.
The writer lacks the maturity to understand the zombie genre. Remember the Scream Mask? Well this book is like spending hours looking at the mask, no depth and no relief.
I never want to buy another book by this writer and the reader was exhausting to listen to for hours. Nasal and terrified like a small child in his narration--the material was not his fault but choosing to put his time and name on the material was a poor decision.
Delete the feelings of the zombies, focus on survival and interactions with other survivors. Make strong characters that can survive. Not a viking bitch with knock out tits and an effemimate newscaster. He spends the whole books saying lines like, (Ohhhhhh Goddddd!!!)
Save your money, read Mark Tufu. Zombies are all around us. They are society members who want to suck us dry. They are on the fringe but they want more. No matter how much you try to help it is never enough. They are takers and incapable being part of carrying on their own lives, they want what you have. They want it all. They never stop. They dont have feelings. They only care about themselves.
I love zombie books, but this has got to be one of the best, if not the best zombie book that I have read thus far. It is not the same old "must have brains" zombie book where they walk around senseless and has not real story line. This book had a great story line, great characters, and I did not want it to end. It is a rare find to come across a zombie book that brings humanity into it and not just zombies zombies zombies. I love this and recommend this listen for anyone who appreciates a good zombie tale. A zombie tale that explains how the zombies population got started (which was very unique and a new one for me). The characters are easy to relate to and the narrator, William Dufris did an excellent job of bringing this book to life. It's not often you find a zombie tale that brings you the gore that all zombie fans love, the horror that we all crave, and even a tear or 2 to your eyes in a couple of places. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be listening to it again at least once. Two thumbs and two toes up for this book. lol Enjoy!!!
Yes because its hard to read during a commute
The beginning scenes with the mortuary and the hunt through the woods.
The coffee shop scene where the escaped zombie murder enters the starbucks and is left to your imagination mostly.
Just good fiction
Should be a movie, Lead character was a little over the top at the end but what the hell I liked resident evil too.
The story was fast moving, the characters seemed real, and the story was "believable", as far as zombie stories go. Can't wait for th next book!
This was another terrific book from Maberry! His books are fast paced and extremely entertaining. If you are a fan of zombies and/or horror I would give it or any of his books a try. Warning, it is graphic and not suitable for the faint of heart. Also, some have complained that the narration was not the best but at least in my case the story caught my attention and I never noticed.
available to lend their vocal talents to this story. Good plot, good character development but man narration is the key. I'll stay away from this narrator. IMHO the lack of subtle changes to shift characters ruined it for me. PeacE
