Fascinating look into what the author calls historical normalcy, growing up in Pa near a lot of derelict farms it always was lost on me why we shipped so much of our food in, w/o utilizing what we have at our feet. Joel discusses everything from food politics to family and faith, and the interconnectedness of all things.
This enlightening book discusses how far we've come since the "olden days" and how, in many cases, we've allowed our rights & freedom of choice to be taken from us. It's frightening that our own government has made it difficult, in some cases impossible, to grow healthy, organic food in a humane & natural environment & sell it to whomever wants to buy it. They want to keep us eating food that's genetically modified, grown with & in numerous chemicals/pestcides/drugs, & irradiated or "sterilized" (in chlorine, etc.) in disgusting, disease ridden, filthy, inhumane, feed lots (etc)! Why? Because BIG FOOD corporations OWN the USDA, FDA, EPA, etc. There is so much more to this book, than just the true stories that prove the above statement; and all of it is important. We live in a dangerous time/place...read this book!
I took the time to listen to this book based on a friend's recommendation. She saw and heard Joel speak in Florida. I watched several YouTube videos of Joel Salatin and wanted more. This book is worth every minute. I am checking out the printed version so I can write down the other authors he recommends.
I've already ordered a paperback copy of the book. I will be doing quite a bit of underlining in it. It would be worth the money just to have the list of other books and authors he references! Well done.
I wish I could've met him when I was younger. Although I have had some people near me that have helped me understand lots of these basic, and necessary, ways of life.
BEST BOOK EVER!
Everyone should read this book. I think Joel should be president of the US!
This is a must read for anyone who cares anything about the quality of the food you eat or the freedom to choose the food you eat.
There is an abundance of information in this book that covers so many facets of our food in general and the industrial food system versus heritage and traditional food systems. You might even say it's an over abundance. Read or listen several times over. It's worth every minute many times over!
Each re-read will give you another "ah ha!" that you didn't catch the first time around.
Read this book and share it with as many others as possible.
If only everyone would listen or read this book! Unfortunately folks who already know and care about the things that are happening to our food rights are probably the only people reading this type of literature. Required reading for all!!! My kids are going to read this whether they want to or not! Fabulous, informative, packed with content! This is not one of those waste of words books. Thanks, Joel. Keep on keeping on. You are hope incarnate.
