I love John Nesbo's Harry Hole series so I thought I would give this a try. It is quite good and keeps you on your toes guessing what will happen next. Although all of the characters are wanting in moral character, the combination of them is a good fit. Set in Oslo, Norway like the Harry Hole series, the backdrop is the same. The book even brings in Krepos, the same crime squad Harry works in ( but no Harry). Roger Brown, the Headhunter, has his faults but undergoes an evolution during book. In the end, everyone get what they deserve.
As some reviewers mentioned, it reminds me of the Girl with Dragon Tattoo series. If you like either that series or other John Nesbo books you will like this.
I'm a fan of Nesbo's series involving Harry Hole, and was curious to read more of his work. The first hour of this book was great, but the story went downhill from there and meandered from gross to boring and back again. Not recommended.
I have read all of Jo Nesbo's books, and enjoy the continuity of characters. This book is a deviation from his other books. I did finish the book, but I did not enjoy it nearly as much as his others. It is written in first person from the main character, who is a "headhunter" in the business world, and a shady character who delves in illegal work to provide additional money for his adored wife. It is a mystery, and developed fairly well, but just not up to his normal standards.
I almost gave up on this book several times. The lead character is not a likeable guy and he is presented by the narrator as being arrogant and condescending. Turns out that these are both necessary for the plot. Don't give up on it and you will be pleased.

This book and its premise about professional headhunters, people who recruit high level professionals for employment, got off to a great start with a great character. Then came a nice, well-placed twist. So far so good. Then, the main character begins an adventure that lasts the majority of the book and requires a HUGE amount of suspension of disbelief. The ending is mildly entertaining but I did not care for Nesbo's methods of exposition through a lot of the book. He's written better ones. I will say the narrator was excellent in all respects.
I enjoy spy, military, psychological, technical and fiction based in reality and science. I really value intimate, thorough writing.
Without Remorse by Tom Clancy. A man with particular skills against an ugly force. Mistakes and triumphs. Resolution and suffering. Shaped by their experiences but at their core they remain the same person.
Graver's talk about his military experiences. You can feel the aggression and mysteriousness. It is a treat to see Brown attempt to regain his footing after trying to apply mechanical tactics to a monster like Graver. The conversation was like watching a boxer attempt defend against combination after combination. All the while illustrating Graver's personality and capabilities. It also humanizes Roger a bit because up until this point, minus a few admitted weaknesses, he is basically a god to us.
Yes. Absolutely. Excellent pacing. I just wanted to know what was happening next. Needed to know.
I saw the movie first. Years ago. So it ruined a few of the surprises for me me but this was still QUITE enjoyable.

OK I'm a wanton whore to Nesbo and Harry Hole...
and I am not disappointed in this offering... Nesbo crafts the intricacies of these things so well that you'd think he was a locksmith in stead of an author... tick, tick, tick, tick.
This disgusting book is entirely about dysfunctional, abominable people. I was hoping that the protagonist (the head hunter) would meet his come-uppance at the end; but the author was not even kind in that regard. I cannot imagine how it came to be highly regarded by others.
