I don't think I would read another book from Laini Taylor. I may finish this particular series because it has great mythology, but it gets too bogged down in the sappiness of the romance. This novel tries too hard to be Romeo and Juliet, therefore losing all the urban fantasy aspects to a cheesy love story that feels forced.
The fantasy mythology is interesting and could be very rich, if the author made room for an actual plot. This story is advertised as an exciting story about angels and the underworld, but then gets SOOOO SLOWWW as it indulges in so many love scenes. Further, if this is supposed to be YA fiction, it is not age appropriate. There are too many references to sex for a younger child to read.
I feel like this was a great story that an editor picked apart to fit into today's "trends" rather than let the story organically flow.
If Audible is going to carry this series, it should at least provide all three books. I'm guessing I can live without the last book in the series, but it is incomplete.
Happiness is a good book!
It's a great second installment in the series. It's a story about a war between two very different societies. The thing is, I loved & understood both sides. Looking forward to the next in the series. Love the narrator & the characters. AWESOME.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. While not the best writing/prose, the story was interesting and fun. Well read too. Overall I would highly recommend if you are looking for an entertaining story
Interesting read! A lot of books are predictable but not these two books! Enjoyed both very much!
Easy going listener, I only write reviews is the book is really good or really bad.
Such a unique story.
She's an excellent narrator!! She voices male characters very well.
There are surprise twists in the story kept it very interesting!
Can't wait for a third book!
I would certainly read it again. It is really engrossing, and superbly written. The prose the author uses is just dripping with beautiful descriptions of places I have never been, but wish I could go.
Just as good. She was one of the readers of Pure by Juliana Baggott, and her voice lends itself perfectly.
It was okay. Very creative, but I just couldn't really get into it. I bet if I was younger or a teen, I'd love it. The narrator did a great job! she nailed the dialects and each voice was very specific.
No, I don't like romance novels.
She did a good job.
Definitely. The Swedish girl who was the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
There. Are. Not. Words.
Oh, fine, I'll find some. This book was amazing!
First, there's Karou. Spunky, lonely, blue-haired, Wishmonger's foster daughter Karou. And then, there's Akiva. Beautiful, fearsome, tortured, warrior angel Akiva. It's like a Romeo and Juliet story for paranormal fans. Star-crossed love! Wow! (that's not a spoiler because you could read it on the back of the book lol).
I loved the characters (spunky little Zuzanna the best). They were well-rounded, had great personalities and were incredibly believable (even Brimstone and the other chimaera). I loved the settings (you glimpse Prague with all its beauty, the little shop where Brimstone and the others work and where Karou was basically raised, and Akiva's world, Eretz. You catch little glimpses of it through multiple characters' eyes). The story flowed seamlessly from one event/point of view to the next.
As far as this book is concerned, I think the audio part of it really amplified the characters. Their different tones and accents. The reader, Khristine Hvam, did an amazing job with the voices. The whole experience of listening to the book definitely took it up a step.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romance books. I loved just about everything about the book (the ending left me a teensy bit disappointed but I'm holding out hope that the one issue I had will be resolved in one of the next two books).
came across this book on accident, gave it a try, Happily Suprised! Great story with characters that you really cared about!
