but the author insulted me with the ending.
Boy, was I engrossed. I didn’t want to stop reading. It is a fun way to spend time as long as you can live with a let-down ending. I enjoyed 12 hours of the book, but I’ve been angry at the ending for 24 hours so far.
This is suspense and mystery. This type of story has been done hundreds of times by many authors. But this is well done because the author is a good writer. Good guy hero does smart things which pleased me. Bookkeeper is the main bad guy who has cops and FBI agents on his payroll. He orders murders of anyone who gets in the way. His business is transportation protection for smuggling drugs and humans (sex slave traffic) into the US from Mexico.
Coburn is accused of murdering seven people. He’s on the run and hides in the home of Honor and her four-year-old daughter. He searches her home looking for something he believes her late husband possessed. The cops, FBI, and bad guys are hunting Coburn. Honor soon learns that her life is in danger as well.
I wanted to know more about Bookkeeper. It was hard to figure out how Bookkeeper first started doing all this and so powerfully - all by phone and never in person? Then we get a tell all at the end, which is not a good way to do a character.
My biggest complaint is the ending. I wanted one more sentence at the end (see spoiler). It was such an entertaining story, but then the author jerks you around and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I’m glad I read it, but the author insulted me, like she didn’t care if I liked her book. Before I purchased the book, I read other reviews which complained about the ending, so I prepared myself thinking this won’t be a romance. Just enjoy the story and expect them to separate in the end. I was ready for that. I was ok with that.
But then the author showed romance, and a desire to be together, which lit the romantic spark. The last scene is a possible meeting of the two, but it’s unfinished. The way it’s done, the reader “believes” they will get together. But the author leaves it hanging. So maddening!
The narrator Victor Slezak was excellent.
Genre: suspense mystery with an unknown potential romance.
No. Don't need the graphic romance scenes. Leave something to the imagination!
Really great performance. Added to the listening.
I really enjoyed the story didn't want to put my Ipod down. However, suddenly there are graphic almost visual sex scenes. The book didn't need that at all and took away from it. At that point I thought I was listening to a Harlequin romance novel. The story is really good and doesn't need that at all. Victor Slezak is a great narrator and made it a good listen. When I first started listening I was sure I would download more of her novels, but now I don't think so.
I am hooked on Sandra Brown AND Victor Slezak. This was another thriller with a surprise ending. I enjoyed the unexpected twists within the story. I suspected everyone of being untrustworthy. The characters being on the run truly kept the story moving. I am not a fan of precocious children though. I am old school and believe children should be seen and not heard. Emily cannot be that cute and verbal at age 4. I would rank this second to Envy, but I am working my way through Brown's novels. Highly recommended.
This novel was a "page turner" for me. The plot moved quickly and the main characters were people I could care about, which made it hard to stop listening. For the most part, I was able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride. It was a five star book until the ending, which was just too unbelievable, even though I could see it coming. But still, it was a fun listen overall.
As always the Brown - Slezak is a winning combination. Again Brown has come up with an interesting story and once again Slezak did an excellent job bringing the story to life. The story kept me interested and listening from start to finish. There are few author - narrator combinations that work as well as Sandra Brown and Victor Slezak. I thought that the story was original and compelling. And try as I did I didn't guess who the arch villain was until the arch villain was introduced at the end of the book.
A very good storyline and the characters were believable,
I did not figure out the ending too soon.
I'm a bored Alabamian looking for a way to escape!
I've listen to Game of Thrones, a few Nora Roberts, Jack Reacher, and John Rain. No one can match Roy Dotrice in Game of Thrones. He simply did too many voices. But I'd say this performance was very good.
No, Lethal hasn't turned me off other books. I pre-ordered two of Ms. Brown's upcoming tales.
I liked the voice and cadence of the father in law.
No, I wouldn't want to listen to all of this book in one sitting because it's too long. But I will say I finished the final chapters from 2:45 a.m. - 5:15 a.m. March 4, 2014, which may explain some of my comments, maybe.
The audio performance was good. It was enjoyable. That wasn't the problem. This is the second Sandra Brown book I'd read. I liked Envy, so I searched for another highly rated book and bought it - audiobook as well.
Let me say that if I hadn't read the ending, I would've given the book five stars. The story was full of action, excitement, near misses, a little romance, and a few chuckles. But the ending felt oddly rushed and really made no sense whatsoever. Once the "bad guy" was revealed, I was left scratching my head. It didn't make sense. Then I got angry.
I just finished this book; and I want to hate it for wasting my time with such a bogus ending. However, upon further reflection, I realized 95% was thoroughly enjoyable. Instead, I think I'll create my own ending.
I did re listen as victor Slezak makes the hero, just so Lethal
If you are a SB fan, then you know she always has a twist in the story. This is one of the
better ones. Smoke Screen and White Hot are at the top. Audible only has short version of
white hot, which is a shame. We really miss out.
many but coburn grabbing the kid and her bankie or when he indulges his sweet tooth were good for me. SB always makes her few sex scenes hot hot. Sandra can really paint her heros as strong as they can get. Her adjectives are just so strong and make the hero, just yummy and of course Lethal.
I have all his performances...he has such great a reading voice...I melt as he reads the hunkie male characters.
yup, both times
fans of SB listen to this one twice to catch the clues
I just graduated Nursing school and now have time to read more. Any recommendations would be great.
Amazing, Awesome, Fantastic
Honor - She loved her daughter and would do anything to protect her
Great book. I couldn't stop listening.
Coburn and Honor were equally good characters. Both level headed.
Just a good read.
