This review is late. I forgot what a horrible experience I had with this book and ended up wasting a credit on the next one, so I figured I would go ahead and write both reviews to help me remember not to purchase Book 6 on audio...
I would recommend the book, but not the audio version. Nalini Singh is an awesome author and I have enjoyed all of her novels and short stories so far. I read the first 3 Guild Hunters and decided to listen to the 4th during my commute to and from work. BIG MISTAKE. It isn't obvious from the sample, but the narrator's inflections are off just about every time she speaks in character. The men sound like they're straining to utter every word...as if they aren't actually moving their mouths. And the women all sound like they're crying. I am surprised I actually finished listening to the whole thing.
Singh does a fantastic job advancing all of the series subplots while still maintaining the primary focus on Dimitri and Honor.
All of these men do a great job with Male and Female voices: Phil Gigante, Robert Petkoff (also great with accents), Jim Frangione
These women are also great narrators: Kimberly Alexis, Emma Galvin, Angela Dawe
I would go see this book if it made it to the big screen.
The narrator really ruins this audio. I'm glad I read the first three books because if the audio was my introduction to the series, I might not have continued with the subsequent entries.
"If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be". Most of us are every day hero's. Never mind the kind. Search for more. Listen.
A good story. Just enough balance until the scenes that tore my heart at the deep abiding pain of the main characters.I did not want to cross that line, but got to the other side as they were brief. i admit having my finger poised over the FF button. There was of course strength, endurance, and a great soul deep love that one knows is rare. no two love stories ever exactly alike. The fight scenes made me shiver along with the cruelties that takes a mature mind to if not understand, that you don't have to be other,to know they exist in humanity. The Guild Hunter is resilient.what they lack for in mortal weakness (which is sometimes their greatest strength ) they make up for in determination, skill, guts and heart. Tender moments abound but they skip closely with horrors. I would have only asked for some laugh out loud moments. Not to say there wasn't a touch. This author does not write for the faint of heart. The series is a keeper in my library. I do reserve the right to ff ten seconds.
I baught the audiobook series for 4 times and I just cant stand it any longer. I really hate! hate Justine Eyre's voice. She makes the women all sound like these helpless winney victims. They don't talk like a real person for god sake!! Even as the narrator she is so bad. I would rather read the rest of the series than listen to another time with her voice.
This is the best book of the series so far
Love, love Demetri
She is now my favorite narrator. She literally brings each character to life. Especially Demetri.
When Demetri found out Honor was his wife from the past
Nalini please keep writing this series.
no. Too much sex.
I have enjoyed other books by this writer but this one seemed as if he got tired. More sex and less plot.
Say something about yourself!
For those of you who follow me you know I have been on a role with this Guild Hunter series. I was starting to wonder if it was the writing that fascinated me, or the people. The previous 3 books have all focused around Raphael and Elena…but in this one they are barely mentioned and yup, still fascinated!
This is the story of Demetri, the leader of Raphael’s 7, a vampire over 1000 years old and portrayed as a cold hearted SOB who rarely feels…other than when he is taunting for pleasure. He has been this way ever since he was made into a Vampire because as he was made his mortal world was shredded. He was made against his will by Isis, an Angel of extreme beauty who wanted him in her bed….it didn’t matter that he was married, it didn’t matter that he was happy with his life as a farmer and a father and a husband…she wanted him, and what an angel wants, an angel gets. When Demetri refused her advances she took him by force, and tortured him into being her slave by destroying his family. Demetri has never loved since, and has vowed never to love again! He had ONE wife, and she was his everything.
When Honor, a guild hunter, is called to the tower to assist Demetri uncode an ancient text she is terrified. She has not gotten over her 2 months of torture at the hands of some sadistic vampires who kept her prisoner and played games with her; sick, twisted, cruel games…and now she is being sent to work with one of the most well known vampire for being sick, twisted and cruel…needless to say this has trouble written all over it.
The dance these two have once again proves that no one does sexual chemistry/tension like Nalini Singh. There are some major twists, kind of foreseeable, but still cool to hear. Still a highly recommended series, and yes I’m reading book 5 now which is Jason’s story…can’t wait!!!
Best in series!
The tragedy of Dimitri and Honors past. How beautifully they come together. The ending was soooo satisfying.
Her variation in characters. When Dimitri "spoke", it didn't seem like it was a female doing a man's voice; it was just Dimitri.
I cried and I listened to the entire book in one day.
I liked the first 3 books in the series, but Dimitri and Honor's love seems much more genuine. Their love story was more well developed in one book than Rafael and Elaina's was throughout three books.
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
I have stuck out this series even though it is not my favorite, but not too bad. I will say that this book is the best one so far. I was on the line about continuing on with the series but I think after this one I might. I tend to like series better if the main characters in each book is different and up until now the series has been about Rafael and Elena. But now we get to find out what has happened with Dmitri and Honor. This is a dark tale so if you are squeamish about bad things happening, don't read it. But if you have manage to read the series this far, you have an idea what it is about. Don't read out of order though. I recommend the Psy-Changling series also by Nalini Signh.
I think the story is interesting enough and the characters so well developed, that I'm sure I will listen to it again one day. The Psy/Changling stories are such favorites, I didn't expect to enjoy these Arch angel, Vampire and Hunter stories as much as I do.
I've wanted to hear Demetri's story from the beginning. His back story and this present love story does not disappoint.
No one scene stands out, but the unfolding of the story and relationships keeps me involved until the very end.
I listen to books as I travel hours for business in my car. Nalini Singh's books get me so involved I can miss an exit ramp... but hopefully I'm still a safe driver. It makes the ride seem so much shorter.
