I just finished listening to this book and I loved it! Elizabeth Letts does an incredible job of telling the story of Snowman, a plow horse headed for the slaughterhouse when he is bought for $80 and becomes a champion jumper. The book is filled with in-depth history of the period and the horse world, and Bronson Pinchot does a wonderful job of narrating. Anyone with any interest in horses at all should not miss this one!
I'm constantly listening to recorded books. Right now I'm a bit sick and weak, but can still enjoy a good listen. I'm so glad I have this resource available.
This is high on my list of favorite audiobooks. Started listening late afternoon and listened throughout the night and into the morning. I absolutely loved this book. I'm a horse lover, but the backstory will appeal to everyone who enjoys a good rags to riches story.
Snowman was my favorite character---he had so much personality--AND TALENT.
Yes---and I did.
I wish all books were this good!
Yes, becaus it is a feel good story which makes you believe that anything's possible in this world.
Winning at the Garden.
Harry de Leyer
I loved the narrator, who was terrific. Just wish the author had been a bit more concise in her storytelling. She rehashed WAY too many things, repeatedly telling the background on particular items, taking away from the actual story of SNOWMAN, who was a brilliant horse. Background is good, but I felt there was more of that than the actual story itself.
One of the best books I have ever read! You will laugh, learn, love, and cry. I will never look at horses or the "industry" of horses the same! A must read!
I only listened to the audio version
There were so many moments to remember some happy and some sad
It made me think of how we have to work hard to save these magnificant animals. We can give them new vocations and not send them off to slaughter
I totally enjoyed the book it did make me laugh and cry but so enjoyable
It was a good listen. Shorter than I'm used to, but it really was a nice break and very inspirational.
Maybe, The Black Stallion. If you like a good horse story then you will most likely like this one.
One of the best horse books I have read. Wonderful ! It was a book that I would sit in my car and listen to and not want to get out !
This was a nice story overall, well written and well narrated,
kinda in a catagory all its own.
I think he does a fine job of narration, adding some different voices to the characters with out over doing it.
That it was a true story and a part of our history which I was unaware of...and of course the magnificent animal element...
All of it was a delight...
His talented and skilled storytelling...his voice...his pacing...
Well worth the listen and the good feeling that lasts when it finishes...inspirational...
Later on, maybe. The story is amazing, Snowman is a real "Rocky". The writing is good and makes for a great book for both myself and my son.
Snowman, of course. The writer makes the horse come alive without giving him Disney-like qualities. He is very real, a horse you'd find on any farm in the world. Harry is a strong second favourite. His spirit and unwillingness to give up or quit on anyone - or any horse - is really refreshing, made more so by knowing he is a real person.
A sense of awe and wonder at the story itself - he expresses the emotions I feel listening to the book.
Harry's calm resolve and refusal to pity himself in his health crisis
