Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the story now as much as I did 20 years ago. However the performance, or shall I say the effects used in the performance, left much to be desired. Mr Thompson wasn't the problem. The over use of effects and sound editing interrupted and distracted me from the story more than added to it.
Terrific story, generally well narrated. The sound effects and background music were extremely distracting and took away from the story.
Excellent representation of different characters.
I found the Background sound effects very distracting and it would continually take me out of the story.
I have the original audio book of this book, but this one better due to the outstanding performance. I love the performance of this book so much better than the first. The narrator sounds like he is acting not just reading and the narrator got the names and pronunciations correct in this one unlike the first.
I have this book in many formats it is my favorite of the Thrawn Trilogy. I like the depth of all the characters
This one is only the second one I have listened to and was okay at seeing him as narrator, but much more pleasantly surprised at how well he narrated this novel. This is an outstanding performance from him. I really like Johnathan Davis as well, but they made a great choice with Mr. Thomson.
All the above at different and various places. I like when a book draws me in and makes me part of the story instead of just a listener. This book is one of those types of books.
Outstanding book and wonderful performance. Thank you for this outstanding option.
I like my horror, techno-thrillers, and science fiction. Which is why Jurassic Park and The Lost World are 2 of my favorite books ever!
This was the very first audiobook I ever listened to. That is, the abridged cassettes read by Denis "Wedge Antilles" Lawson, a long time ago, a couple states away. Now, finally, a perfect audiobook experience is available in this unabridged version of Heir to the Empire. This story was great when I read it back in high school, and is even better now! I always considered Timothy Zahn's trilogy to be Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, although they aren't officially recognized as such.
The sound effects were distracting at first, because I don't hear many effects in other audiobooks, but considering the sounds and music are from Star Wars ( tattooed on my brain since childhood), I found them to actually enhance the story. This is my first listen to Marc Thompson ever, and it's no wonder why he does all the Star Wars narrations. Perfection! This is quite possibly the best audiobook I have ever heard. Bring on Dark Force Rising and The Last Command! The Force is most definitely with us...
I am an avid eclectic reader.
This is my first Star Wars book and also the first time I had heard Marc Thompson narrate a book. I was impressed with this reading of the book. This book also has sound effects. The book kept me interested with good story line and lots of action. I could visualize the characters better because I had seen the movies. The book ended with a to be continued.
Really enjoyed this book. Performance is excellent except for the women's voices but I think that can't be helped without bringing in a second reader. Story is well written. I tried some of the newer Star Wars books and this just blows them out of the water. Really like how Luke was written in this book. He seems like a difficult character to write but Zahn makes him interesting and very human.
The only Star Wars book I have read was, " Shadows Of The Empire." With my job, using Audible is a perfect way for me to get caught up while I work. It is nice to hear sound effects and voice over, sort of feeling like I am listening to the audio of a movie. I am excited to start the next in the series, " Dark Force Rising." I am incredibly intrigued to see where the storyline leads as well as the new version that Timothy Zhan will be writing as well as how Disney will tie all of this new extended universe together. If you are at all of a Star Wars and or Star Trek fan I can with full confidence already recommend this trilogy. If you are like me and have a hard time trying to find time to sit and read and are constantly on the move a.k.a. walking and public transportation, as well as a busy work day in your cubicle but have access to headphones,, I personally believe this is a must buy, or perfect for your first free download already convinced me to purchased the next.
I don't typically enjoy a TON of sci-fi/fantasy for adults but I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. This book has all the old characters you know and love and plenty of the action you'd expect from the Star Wars universe. While some aspects of the story were a bit cheesy or melodramatic, overall it was enjoyable and held enough interest to convince me to seek out the other books. Admiral Thrawn as a character was that menacing/mysterious combination that I can't wait to learn more about. The narration was mostly spot on with two glaring exceptions. I could not take the Leia voice Marc Thompson used, and Luke's voice also seemed quite passive and without emotion.
