I am usually quite wary of books that "everyone" says a fantastic. I've had too many disappointments with books that the world-at-large thinks are magnificent (Shades of Gray); But Night Circus-well Night Circus is actually as they say,"Magic". Surprise - this time the world was right!
This book weaves a spell around you - by the time that the story is over, the only thing that you want to do is to find this circus and run to it, fast, far and true.
Ah, but timing is everything. . . .
Let me start by saying that I really liked this book and was sad that it was over. However, it was a slow journey to get into it. It's a gorgeous setting, and magical idea. I loved her attention to detail. However, the imagery felt like the story itself and not the icing on the cake. And I'm a girl who LOVES her imagery, especially when put in such a beautiful and magical setting. But, in the middle of the book I was extremely bored with the lack of action and one dimensional characters. As I read more about the author, I understand why this happened. Morgenstern likes to write the location first and the rest comes after. Also, it's her first novel, so I can definitely cut her some slack.
The last third of the book is where things finally got interesting. The different chapters and characters finally started to come together and make sense. Before the love story gets moving, everything feels a little disjointed.
Jim Dale is fantastic, no surprises there. I loved listening to him tell the story. Most chapters begin with a date which is frustrating because the dates aren't that far apart, and you can't simply look back a chapter to remember where the last one took place to remind yourself. I would get confused because the book jumps around to different places often, and I was too lazy to search for the last chapter's date.
Even with these complaints, I did really enjoy the book. I just wish the characters and plot were as interesting as the environment descriptions. Perhaps it's a better book to read in print, but then you'd miss out on Jim Dale's reading.
I am among the minority who do not like this book; I'm only sticking with it because I paid for it. If you love the idea of a magical circus and magic being real and enjoy description of magical environments and effects, you may be among those who love the book. I'd prefer character development, human emotions, and/or a plot.
Jim Dale couldn't have been a more perfect narrator for this beautifully descriptive tale. My only issue was getting past the fact that he narrated the Harry Potter books. It took me at least an hour to get past what sounded like a conversation between Slughorn and Dumbledore and be able to visualize the characters they were meant to be. The story itself was enchanting and cleverly written. A welcome escape from reality and into the wonders of what we wish could be real.
From the very first minute of this audiobook, I was hooked. This is almost entirely due to the narrator Jim Dale. He is by far the best narrator I have ever come across. He has an enchanting and unique voice that easily transports you into the world of the Night Circus. This is one of the few audiobooks that made me wish that every drive was just a little bit longer. I will admit that I found the ending to be a little contrived, but I still believe its definitely worth a listen. I only wish that there were more books for adults narrated by Jim Dale , and I eagerly anticipate Erin Morgenstern's follow-up novel.
I certainly would, it's got some magic to it and it's so well thought out and written.
Very creative and descriptive, it takes you right into the circus!
The parts in which he describes the senses perceived during the visits to the circus, he looks like he is very much into it.
No... the final part and how it connects right again through the beginning (this is not a spoiler, don't worry, but others who read the book will understand) is sensational
The scottish accents were somewhat annyoing lol... but regardless, absolutely check out this book. It should definitely be made into a movie. I can imagine Tim Burton doing an amazing job at the rendition.
I loved the style and quality of writing in this book!
I couldn't get enough of this book and the narrator did a wonderful job. The book isn't suspenseful but i still didn't want to put my iPhone down.
Wow this was a great read! So unique and enchanting. I feel there has always been something mysterious and intriguing about circuses, but this book takes that feeling to a whole new level! I loved it so much I ordered it for my mom to read too. The detail is so rich. If you are a fan of fantasy there is no way you won't enjoy this book!
The narration was also superbly done.
I would absolutely love to see someone like Peter Jackson make this into a movie!!
I really had no idea what to expect from this book and frankly bought it more out of curiosity. I have to say, I was quite pleased. Although I normally do other things around the house while listening to audiobooks, I found myself closing my eyes and picturing the images written in this book. The story is quite gripping and full of imagination. I believe this is Ms. Morgenstern's first book. I hope she writes many more!
