It would make a delightful movie with incredible special effects. The characters were well written.
the story brings it's listener into an amazing black and white, yet strongly colored fantastic steam punk world...so much so that he makes you wish you could be in his circus
I loved this book so so much. From the very first line to the very last line, it wraps you up in a stunning, magical world that you can get lost in. It's mysterious, romantic and sometimes heartbreaking. The author is a genius storyteller who paints pictures so vivid you feel like you are there. To top it all off, it's read by Jim Dale, the most master storyteller ever. His performance is perfection and I can't imagine anyone else reading this story. I am absolutely in love with everything about this audiobook!!
There was poor character development, and I often felt confused at who the character was. Also many of the characters had multiple names, which added to the confusion. For example, Alexander is also called Mr. AH and "the man in the grey suit." I didn't know that until I looked it up towards the end of the listen. Most of the middle of the book I was uninterested in, and felt like giving up on the listen. The mystery of the "game" kept me listening.
The plot itself was interesting; unfortunately it was poorly executed, in my opinion.
There were bouts of interesting scenes. I loved the beginning of the book when you learn about Celia as a young girl and her growing up. Also it gets interesting again towards the end of the book when things are starting to come together.
Someone died in this book, and I am still not sure who it was. Some guy made clocks, and I am not sure how that was relevant either. I think overall there were too many characters with too little development. Or maybe it was just that this book did not keep my attention, so I was not fully engaged enough to get to know the characters.
Jim Dale's performance was great, but I don't think he was a good fit for this book. The main characters were young, as well as most of secondary characters, so I think they should have had a younger narrator.
The best, up there with Harry Potter!
There is not much to compare it to, it is beautifully unique.
His voice is absolutely perfect and he does a phenomenal job!
This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever experienced. The detailed descriptions create a wonderfully magical world that you feel like you are walking through and witnessing. The narrator is as phenomenal as the story.
Jim Dale is a wonderful narrator, and the story was exquisitely crafted. I loved it, though the beginning was a bit slow. This will be one to listen to again!
At first I wasn't sure if I would like the narration but after a bit I got used his voice and actually really loved it. Jim Dale did an excellent job creating different voices for the characters that were pretty believable especially given some were women. The story was beautifully written and Mr. Dale's voice really brought it to life.
