Romance to Warm the Heart, Fiction to Stir the Soul
There is useful information in this book but you have to hold onto it among a lot of ethereal imaginative eloquence. (The key word being imaginative.) Pressfield gives wings to his theories with decent prose but Christians say the very same thing much more succinctly and without all the mumbo-jumbo: do the art (the work) you were created to do and you'll be most content, most satisfied in life, not to mention it's the way to honor your Creator. He tells us to expect a battle in the form of resistance. In Christian lingo, we call this putting on the armor of God so that we may fight the good fight. Pressfield can't seem to make up his mind about God, however. He acknowledges "mysterious powers" that run the universe in one breath, in another God, and in yet another angels are behind it all. I'll give him this--He has a handle on one great truth, the one that powers the book. Art is war for the artist. As a novelist, I already knew that.
The first part of the book is strongest, where he tells you how relentless resistance can be, how it wears many disguises, and how we unwittingly cooperate with it. Aside from that, there's not much else really useful here. It's a man's treatise on how things work, based largely in humanism, speculation, and the theory of evolution.
The best ever written on the subject of art and life and focus. Buy it, read it, give it to friends.
...Not really, I think this audio book is reiterating what we all already know and often tell ourself when we procrastinate with any endeavor; Basically overcoming the struggle of procrastination by turning creative endeavors into habits. I did however enjoy his creative take on the matter, albeit a bit proselytizing for my taste.
The first chapter is by far the most important one to read. If you are not aware of what it is that creates the fear that keeps you from doing what you know you need to do, this will get you on the right path.
This book should be read by anyone/everyone! If you have aspirations.. For art/writing/business. This is for you! The is a life book. To be reference for years.
This book holds an amazing aha to success, everyone that aspires to achieve must know what this book holds for them. I was certainly moved to action by the inspiring way Stephen presents resistance.
Everything, in my opinion, made sense in this book. I could not put a finger on as to why I, as well as some people in my life, put down my ideas or made fun of my dreams saying I wasn't good enough or it was not reality. The ideas may not have been the best but I never got a chance to try them or when I was really close I stopped. Now I know why after listening to this book. I look forward to pursing my passions with less skepticism and more belief in what I'm doing is what I need to do to fullfill my deapest desires and potential. Even if it means losing some friends or family along the way and saying, " kiss my butt, resistance. I'm doing it no matter what you say or do" I know I'm living for me and not for anyone else. Even if I fail it doesn't mean I am a failure it means I'm a professional and failure comes with the territory.
