I am being intentionally vague because I hate placing a spoiler in a review.
I had some issues with this story. It felt unfinished to me, and some of the plot mechanisms used were unnecessary or ill suited to their intended purpose. There are characters that go under developed but we expect them to play a big role in the story, and the author does little to reconcile that.
The story moves along like a slow burning match you held too long and eventually burns you, but only because you forgot you were holding it.
Just know it is a slightly above mediocre effort that is not terrible, but not great.
The story moved so slowly that it was almost painful to listen to. The narrator did a good job but the story just fell short.
The hero and his family are applealing characters but far too shallow to care about. I couldn't wait for the book to end.
All of them.
This is a great book and intense from the beginning. It is not the kind of book I normally listen to and I found myself wishing I hadn't gotten it but I got hooked and had to hear the whole thing. The performance is masterful. You will not be disappointed if you like suspense and you like your stories on the rough side.
not knowing why the bad guys were after Mike and his family until the 1/4 of the book
Kat, Mike's daughter
Mike leaving his daughter at the foster mom's home---so sad
I would have loved to but didn't have the the time
Wow, this was a great book! This is the first book I have read by Hurwitz and I will be adding more of his books to my "to be read" list. A great thriller with a lot of excitement and great characters. You knew right away who were the good guys (Mike Windgate and his family)and who were the bad guys but not until the last quarter of the book do you find out why the bad guys are are after Mike and his family. And the bad guys are very evil. This was a great read (or audio book as I listened to it) that is what we all look for in a thriller.
I'm an avid listener always searching for another good book and willing to share my thoughts with a pithy review.
The story line of a tough childhood and how this guy manages to develop character traits that were fashioned by his orphanage roots keeps you listening and often on edge. Will his next encounter with danger cause him to abandon his best friend and or his family? Or will he remain true to his hard earned principles and do the right thing even when it hurts? His best friend is a felon who you will learn to love. You just can't get enough of this guy.
If you're like me, you get bored with long listens that lack action, and with writers that fill pages with never ending descriptions of irrelevant things. This novel has a small dose of writer's drivel, but it has enough action and suspense to make it well worth your time.
Scott Brick does well with some of his voice changes to help with the character distinctions...nice job with the best friend. But overall, I found him overly dramatic too often. I really enjoy hearing multiple narrators. I listen to several books per month and I've really come to appreciate a combination of male and female narrators. I think it really adds value, and I hope to find more books that offer that feature. Cheers, Ken
Excellent, perfect, exciting
Never stopped wondering what was going to happen next
I cried in a few parts,on the edge of my seat in some
Highly recommend a great read
This is one of the more entertaining mysteries I've read in a while. The plot takes a twist I didn't expect, and I like a story that is a step ahead of me.
I listened to this book while I had a rather undesirable painting project going on in the garage for a couple of weeks. It made the hours pass much more quickly, and I would go paint, just to listen to more of the story.
This story had interesting characters. The main character, in particular, was well developed.
This one had me holding my breath with suspense in some parts. If you are looking for a fast-paced gripping adventure/suspense novel, you will enjoy this book. I liked it so much that I immediately downloaded Hurwitz's previous novel as well. ,
I didn't know what the mystery was about until towards the end. And it kept my attention!
If I tell u it would wreck it for u.
I find Scott to be a fairly good reader but his somewhat melancholy monotone-sound bugs me sometimes.
Some of the things the characters go through sometimes over the top but still a great listen!
