I remember liking Scott Brick more in other readings. It's odd, he did really well on the characterizations, but in the more narrative parts, he kept droning on with this weepy tone that detracted from the necessary or needed. I found myself relieved when he would go into character as the narrative voice really got painful.
Now the book, the writing and mostly the story, kept me listening. It's a slow burn kind of plot. It does get better as it progresses. The reasons and motives at the end were not shocking, or thrilling, but interesting. You get very interested in the characters and their story. That is the core value here.
The characters are almost laboriously developed, but I think a lot of the feeling of labor steamed more from the narration than other factors.
Would I recommend this book as a worthwhile (read) listen? Sure. The writing is above average for sure. It's Scott that kinda' let me down this time, but mostly in the narrative. Characters "voices" were fine. Less weepy narrative would have made the book 4~5 stars.
The prose, the story line, the fact that this writer does not telescope the plot/ending. An extremely good mystery/thriller that has me, now, a fan who will download all of Greg Hurwitz books. I must also mention the reader, Scott Brick, who is absolutely a perfectchoice.
After listening to many books, I have finally found a writer that is worthy! Great prose, incredible story line, that does not telescope the plot/ending. A thriller in the true sense of the word. Frankly, I wanted to go straight through to the end, however, as it is so very good, I also wanted to savour it, and am still listening. I just wanted to share this so that more listeners can enjoy a fine writer. I shall download the rest of his books, hopefully, they will all be unabridged. If not, could Audible make it so. Thank you Greg Hurwitz, you have restored my faith in the written word. An avid Los Angeles listener.
I enjoy listening to great detective mysterie & also great thrillers. I enjoy books also by Vince Flynn, David Baldaci including assasins.
The mystery. No clue on the why you were next.
The surprise the energy each character brought to the book.
Yes. I love Scott Brick's performances.
A great thriller. I encourage listeners to not pass this one by.
This is my first book with Gregg Hurwitz, but numerous times with Scott Brick. The combination was spot on. Its a must listen to,
The biggest problem I had with this book was that I was expecting Shep to be the equalizer and get the bad guys back, a sort of "now you're gonna find out what fear is". Instead Michael didn't really seem to need him.
And the whole reason behind the terror was kind of lame and unbelievable.
But I liked the going back in time and how the relationship with Shep came into being.
We were looking for a mystery/drama that would draw us into the story, and Mr. Hurwitz did not disappoint. The narration was spot on as well. This is not a story for people who cannot take a little tension in the plot.
Not much on writing reviews for books but this was worth a review. I will just agree with everyone else its that edge of your seat, can't put down kinda book. Awesome. Needs to be a movie.
I really loved this book. You will fall in love with so many of the characters that it hurts to see the book end. I've never read any of Hurwitz before, but I plan to definitely look into his other work. Great writer, great story, great performance! Loved it!!
Truly astounding, I didn’t know what was coming next; on the edge of my seat!!! Could not put it down, but was very afraid for what was coming next. I truly was enveloped in this story line. This is a must read. Outside of what I normally read. I loved the suspense!
Harlan Coben is one of my favorite authors, but may soon be taken over by Gregg Hurwitz. Narrator Scott Brick does a few Coben novels and I've always found him to be excellent - in my option, the best in the business. I did a search for Scott Brick and came across Gregg Hurwitz. You're Next was the first book to try and I'm glad I did. Excellent story with believable main characters that you get emotionally attached to and really bad guys hunting them down - it reads like a movie (fast paced and gripping). I may go through all of Hurwitz's collection now, downloading Survivor next (again by Scott Brick so I don't think I'll be disappointed).
