Just about the best read and a reminder what our democracy is really all about. It is a classic and best company, spending time with Lincoln via Audible. Doris Kearns Goodwin is truly remarkable.
The content of this book was great. The greatness of Lincoln really shines through. However, the first quarter of the book almost focused on the rivals too much. Would have loved more Lincoln content from the time before he was President. Anyways, it was a great read and really educational.
As for the narrator, it should have been a male. Almost all the characters are male. The made it a little dull at times. But, that is a minor issue.
It took me 2 years to finish it, buy I finally did. This book is one of the greatest stories I have ever read; the most complete and detailed recount of the U.S. Civil War that I know of. Undoubtedly, Abraham Lincoln was and will continue to be one of the greatest leaders that the United States has known.
One of if not the finest biography I have ever read. By telling the story of Lincoln through his complex relationships to the eventual cabinet, it is truly mesmerizing. Through the course of the book Lincoln grows, he grows inch by inch to become the magnanimous figure we have statues of. With a power of not just conviction and principles (I think so many people in history have these) but the ability to read, influence and work with people that are so completely at odds with him all in an effort to sustain the country he loves....it is just awe inspiring. You cannot walk away from this book the same as when you pick it up
Reading the classics
Lincoln's wisdom and generosity of spirit made him a great president . The union was saved and slavery abolished because of his vision for the United States and his humanity to his fellow man.
Likes: UNBELIEVABLE insight into the man rather than the icon; you come away feeling like you almost really know him.
Dislikes: no way around this one, really, as its side effect of my like: this is a pretty dense book, with many sources quoted and many voices incorporated into the text. The reader does a great job considering this challenge, but this isn't a "casual listen."
Overall: highly recommended!
A thorough narrative of a great man which should be read or listened to by all those mature enough to comprehend the impact of such a wise, noble, yet simple leader upon fellow human beings.
With the often seeming decay of moral fiber today, this work inspires those of good nature and character to think long and hard upon their own lives in that they too may work to gain the esteem of others by earning it with their fair and kind actions as did Abraham Lincoln.
One of the most inspiring books I've had the benefit to enjoy.
moving, without being eloqutious , beautifully written, nicely narrated, comprehensive but not boring, left with a reverence and respect for Lincoln not had before listening, highly recommend to history buffs, the politically inclined, and anyone who loves this country.
