I have read Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series and have waited for Audible to acquire these books. I enjoyed them immensely through reading and hoped to enjoy listening. Wonderfully out of the ordinary storyline and characters. I'd recommend this series to anyone looking for something new and in a futuristic type world.
I've been looking for a series as interesting as Kresley Cole's Immortals series and from what I can tell, this series will do it. Interesting premise. Great characters and development. Lots of direstions to take the story without jumping the shark or getting boring. Love it.
I'm a grad student with very little time to edit reviews because I'm editing research papers. Forgive the typos. They're made with love.
I have a LOT of books in my library but it's Nalini Singh's psy-changling series that I keep returning to. Not only are they great stories, they're easy to listen to and great to replay while cleaning or focusing on other things. I faintly decided to write a review after listening to it for the umpteenth time, so I guess that answers the question. If you haven't heard it already, start now.
Changelings are like weres and shifters, and in this book they are of the leopard variety. You can compare it to other shifter books, but this world seems to be better realized than others. There's also the psy element, which are a race of people with mental abilities.
It's hard to pick between Lucas and Sasha. Lucas is that strong dominant male you're probably looking for in a leading man if you are reading these reviews and Sasha is such a fish-out-of-water with him because of her non-emotional way of living. Nikita also becomes a favorite in the series.
Imagine living in a world without love or emotion. Your mother is cold, and you are a broken version of your race. Something tugs at your heart but you have no idea what it is and meanwhile this leopard changeling is toying with you, ready to pounce. It's no secret how the book will end, but the journey of watching these two together is great.
I can't recommend this series enough. Buy it.
But there was a good sex scene.
I liked the world creation and character definitions. But the method of storytelling didn’t work for me. Too much drama was in the head instead of normal dialogue and action. There were too many mental ponderings and inaccurate assumptions. Some of this would be ok, but there was too much of it. It dominated the story. I needed to see more physical activity. Examples follow.
1. A Is thinking: We need to do B, but if C happens, then I’ll have to do D, and then I’ll worry about E, but F has special powers and I don’t know if my shields will hold. (mental ifs and thens.)
2. Lucas tells Sasha he likes her smell. Later Sasha tells herself she must leave him because: he is using her, he’s exploiting her, he thinks she stinks. (He just told her he liked her smell.)
3. A is planning to die because she believes that is the only way to do something. So the reader is worried. A doesn’t tell anyone, or consider other possibilities, or ask questions. Then B does something. Now A is surprised to learn she won’t die after all. She didn’t know B could do that.
4. Someone tells the changelings who the killer is. The next scene has the changelings report back that they killed the killer and did such and such with his body. That should have been shown. I wanted to see how the changelings arrived, what they said, watch the fight, see the killer suffer, save the victim, talk to the victim. None of that was shown. It was just a couple sentences afterwards. A let down.
This is book #1. There are many books in the series. I read book #3 five years ago and gave it 2 stars. I wanted to give the series another chance with this book, but I guess it’s not for me.
The narrator Angela Dawe was very good.
Genre: paranormal romance
I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY - Sasha is a psy who is supposedly incapable of human emotion. Lucas is a changeling (a human with a panther lying just beneath the surface.) They share a physical attraction for each other, but pursuing a relationship will have its challenges. Throw in a business venture and a kidnapping which they must investigate together, and you've got the basic formula for this story.
This was my first experience with psys and changelings, so I enjoyed learing about these two species, however, once I became comfortable with the characters and their unusual powers I found nothing left besides your basic sexy romance story. There is a decent plot behind the romance and I enjoyed the book, but I was hoping for more from this series that just wasn't there.
NARRATION - The narrator does a pretty good job and I like the male voice she gives to Lucas. She rushes a bit between chapters sometimes, which can be distracting. A pregnant pause would give the listener a moment to think about what has just happened and change gears for what's to come.
OVERALL - If you're looking for a sexy supernatural romance, you will probably enjoy this book. The story underlying the romance is okay but could have been much better.
I enjoyed the characters and the world Singh created. I can't wait to see how it all ends. I can't stop reading.
I would say yes
the pace and the mix of mystery and romance
I enjoyed this audio so much that I will be buying the series.
Normally, I find the overall plot of a romance to be very dry and boring, and the characters two dimensional... and that just barely. Nalini Singh has created in this series not only a plot and a set of idiosyncratic characters that I cannot entirely predict, but several sets of individual subcultures in the framework of a parallel reality with the question of humaniod ethics and the concept of basic freedom hanging in the balance; all this together with plot twists that keep me listening and hanging on every word. I especially appreciate that her eventual lovers are able to explore their own misgivings about themselves and one another, continually having to make compromises, setting limits and challenging one another as a 'real' couple would. Bravo, Ms. Singh, and my congratulations on Angela Dawe's exceptional delivery!
I love this book. Can not wait for the rest of the series. Thanks Audible.
I enjoy reading series and very rarely read stand alone series. I mostly read romance and sci-fi & fantasy.
I was looking for a new series to listen to and I was putting off this series because of the sample that I listened to. but after purchasing it I was instantly hooked. I think that what made it so enjoyable was it was a book that was totally different from anything I normally listen to.
In this book I liked Sascha. She didn't know what was going on with her abilities but, she was still willing to push forward and try to do everything in her power to help those in need.Even if they want to rip out her throat for being psy.
