Typically I'm "reading" science fiction or thrillers. I enjoy light reads that don't require a lot of investment to get into.
No. There isn't a lot of replay value here, to be brutally honest.
Yes. I'm going to get the second book in the series.
The last portion of the book is good.
Honestly, while you could argue you need some of the background info, this story takes a while to start to get interesting. The first 3/4 is politicking and groundwork for what I hope is an epic storyline in the next few books.
I'm getting book 2...but you really have to deal with some slow parts in this one. I could see how people would get lost and give up quickly.
I never read the print version so couldn't say. Usually the written versions are better as you use more of your own imagination, in my opinion. I suppose that will be different from person to person. However, this audio version is great. Ideal for commutes to and from work.
Man, there are so many sci fi space related books out there. Jack's books stand out when it comes to space battles and technology. Just more believable. In space, you can see things coming at you light years away even with technology available today. Battles have many hours or days of build up and manoeuvring before engagements take place. The way Jack explains how lazers are used for communication, "give me a tight beam" just makes sense and would be the logical step we'd take to achieving high speed communication based on technology we already have.
My favourite part is when they reach Midway. Mainly because the fleet meets Co president Ayseenai (spelling?). Which spins off another great serious focussing on syndicate officials Ayseenai and Dracon and their defection against the Syndicate. Can't wait for book 3 in that serious.
oh man.....if there were films made, I'd be so elated. Tag line.? "To the honour of our ancestors" ? I'm not good at tag lines. If there were to be a movie and tag lines needed, I'd rather Campbell make the decision rather then publishers or editors. It is my understanding that the publishers and editors forced Jack to make changes to the tittles of his books, tittles that didn't make sense.....for marketing purposes i assume.
I pretty much scoop up any Lost Fleet audibles available. One day I will also collect all the paper back versions as well.
You can really see Campbell's navy experience come through in the fleet engagements. His depiction of spaceship battles in the future are far better representation then in many other sci fi stories.
I really like the Aliens he's come up with too. Each very unique and very thought out. lol Bear Cows and Spider Wolves......you'll see what I am talking about when you get to book 2.
This picks up right where the Lost Fleet series left off and continues with the same excitement and energy of it's predecessors.
This was my first listen of a book in the Black Jack Geary universe and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I went back and listened to all nine books. I listen to 2-3 audio book a month and Christian Rummel is an INCREDIBLE narrator. He brings each character to life so distinctly that I instantly recognize the voices of even MINOR characters. Very easy to follow.
Geary is hard not to like.
The voice characterizations are AWESOME. I don't think it would be anywhere NEAR as good a read, as a listen, Rummel is that good.
I'm glad that 8 of books were out already before I connected with the series. The annual wait between books would have frustrated me.
Need to listen to the previous series, which is where this serious take over. Some of the references are lost because I didn't know about the 1st series. "The Lost Fleet"
Once you get past the first 5 hours of yada yada yada, it becomes a captivating story. I almost turned it off and started another book.
The book would be much better if the first 5 hours were condensed to about 1/2 hr.
Yes, I am going to listen to it again. I listened to the lost fleet series and want to go back and relive the Beyond the Frontier extended series
Yes, performance gives life to the book
Worth the read
No this book has not action
Compare ? no if you want a good book get SWARM By B.V Larson Action from start to end .
Just looking for a good book this one was not my cup of tea .
Nothing, not my place.
Good story line but a bit childish.
Mind you I like the book, having listen through the first series. Narration was great, however the characters seems too simple. Its like watch a star trek episode, lots of pops while you are listening to it, but the after taste is kinda flat. I only wish real life people were this comical.
I am an Australian woman who enjoys reading many different styles of books, from history to sci fi and mystery to poetry.
Another of the Black Jack Geary book. Another rollicking ride in space. The characters remain the same and now the enemy is a new one. It's a fun listen. Not great literature and it won't stretch the old grey matter too much but it is bloody good fun.
