The book was good but it is more a murder novel than a romance novel. I thought I was getting into a romance novel. Probably would not have read it if I realized it was mainly about murder. Narrator is good and easy to listen to.
The last 10 chapters forms the story effectively or (last 5-6 hours). You may skip more than half of the book
This was my first Nora Roberts book, and I loved it! All of the characters were interesting and likable. I like that both Rowan and her father had a romance to pursue. I really enjoyed how Rowan and Gull were able to relate without a bunch of dumb Rom-Com misunderstandings presenting false stumbling blocks. It was great to see a cast of competent yet flawed human beings, which made the story more realistic to me. The backdrop of fire jumping was interesting and exciting, creating a lot of tension. The only criticism I have is that the antagonists were all a little two dimensional for my tastes, and it was pretty obvious to me who was behind all the drama. That said, there were plenty of interesting twists before the finale, so overall it was a good story.
The narration was very good. Rebecca Lowman was able to make distinct voices for all the characters, so it was easy to keep track of who was speaking, even when several characters were in the same place. She also has an engaging voice and puts the right amount of emotion into the narrative parts.
I have listened to this book several times and I catch little things I missed on the the previous times good strong characters.. Sheds good light on what hot shots and smoke jumpers go through.
I really struggled to stay with this book and finish it. There was too many fire jumping details. I didn't think the characters were very believable. They were too dreamy.
I really liked Gull, he gave the story a little fun and made it less serious.
I have listened to a few other Rebecca Lowman's performances. She is great at distinguishing voices for people. You're never confused about who is talking. I think that it holds up to her others.
The murder storylines were interesting, but I found myself getting lost during the fire scenes. They were really fast paced and there was a lot of firefighter jargon that got very confusing.
I found the book to be slow to start but it became very suspenseful with each chapter. I loved the characters and did not find this story predictable. It was one of the best reads in a long time.
