love the entire series. have listened to them multiple times. they take you in and keep you riding the ride!
passionate reader and vegan
As mentioned in some of my previous reviews, the whole series of The Black Dagger Brotherhood is an astounding work. This book is no exception. I have read it twice and have now listened; as always there is something learned through listening that was not discerned reading. The culture, story, mythology and characters are substantial and varied. The introduction of Payne as a female warrior 'kicks it up a notch' as she struggles not only with her physical stress but also with her coming of age (and in vampire-speak, that's a lot to say) after being a captive of her Mother for, oh, a bunch of year. Add her introduction to a strong human and you have a great story. The added layer of the Lessers and the Band of Bastards only perpetuates Ms. Ward's ability to weave an complex tale of good vs. evil and the redemptive nature of love.
In this story, Payne was my favorite character as she explored herself on a multitude of levels. One of Ms. Ward's most substantive components of all the Brotherhood books is the layers upon layers of complexities her characters reveal. Payne is no exception and, aside from Xhex, a female 'lead' who confronts her fallibility, her sexuality, her fighting spirit, her anger (at her Mother), her devotion to her culture, her need to and for love of a human 'healer', her gifts and her ultimate redemption. As an aside, the other character development and storyline that was both heartbreaking and joyful was the relationship between Dr. Manello, Payne and Glory (the thoroubred filly so gruesomely injured early n the book in a Ruffian-esque moment of devastation).
As stated before in reviews, as Mr. Frangione is the sole narrator for all of The Black Dagger Brotherhood books, pronunciation of words, the tentative nature and inflection of his female 'voice' and lackluster energy throughout the narration is a detraction from the actual story.
No Payne...No Gain
A total re-write. A different voice actor may've added some interest in these characters but that wouldn't have saved a storyline that struggled to keep momentum.
Anything Lara Adrian or Kelley Armstrong
no. He was very flat in all his readings. None of the characters really had personality that stood out. There was no inflection for emotion. This wasnt all his fault though since Ward doesnt write very dynamic characters anyway.
Not really. A disappointing book in a disappointing series.Couldn't wait for it to be over and will not be picking up another book in this series.
as usual J.R has managed to capture us in her realm of fantasy of vampires and immortality. pretty good narrator, he is one of the few who is able to portray all the voices of his characters with much passion and vigor. I especially like this book as it shows an everyday struggle of falling in love with some one who you can have. cant wait for the book on Blaylock and Quinn.
I love listening to books when time permits! I enjoy this service its awesome!
I rated this as a 4 star because I felt Payne could have been stronger after the butt kicking she continued to give the King over and over again. I felt I wanted to see her in more of an action roll however, I was happy to see her with the doctor. The overall story was a winner and the heat did not disappoint. Love all of J. R Wards book don't miss out this is a definite must read!
Meh. It was okay. Lots of erotica, not a whole lot of story. Still a great series - this just wasn't the strongest of the books.
I would definitely recommend this audiobook to a friend and have. I love the entire series and am miserable waiting for my next credit in order to get the next book. The references to today's music and culture makes the series relate-able. Mix that with vampires, fighting and intimate scenes and you have an entertaining series.
My favorite part is the woman that can hang with the guys fighting and defend her mate.
Jim Frangione's interpretation is flawless, whether he is reading a woman's voice or one of many males. I can hear the difference between each character.
Love the series!
Jim frangione really brings this series to life. The last few books of BDB series have not been my favorite, but this book bright it home for me, loved, loved, loved the story and the change of enemy was a nice change of pace also. Definitely would recommend the entire series!
I would love to listen with another narrator this is a great series but possess a lot with this narrator.
The story continues with action, suspense, passion and more. Many of the reviews were not good, I found the story exciting and wanting more. I can't stop reading the books. I will listen to the series again!
