This is a long one, Great for a road trip. The story takes place in my home state so that was even better! Reader does really well and the story is fun.
Excellent writing. Wonderful narration. Large variety of monsters and characters.
If you are a lover of monster books this is a MUST have.
I've been into various sci fi/fantasy series for awhile now. The Dresden Files and Destroyermen were the first to keep me company on my way to and from work. Then on to the likes of Sandman Slim and the Druid Chronicles. I eventually found my way to Correia's Grimnoir Chronicles.
I really enjoyed the latter and through that became aware of the Monster Hunter series. But for the longest time avoided it. Simply due to the name. It seemed appropriate for a teenager's series. And I never gave it a chance. Finally, waiting for the next entries in all the other series, I was short of listening material. And I gave Monster Hunter a shot.
I am glad I did. The legacy of Owen Zastava Pitt is a good listen. A very good listen. If you are a fan of the Grimnoir Chronicles, or any of the others of this genre by all means give the Monster Hunter series a chance. You won't be sorry.
Going in I confess that I was a bit disappointed that Bronson Pinchot from Corriea's Grimnoir Chronicles was not the storyteller. But any reservations quickly faded. Oliver Wyman does an excellent job here. His character readings have great range. And are very effective.
And Correia does an excellent job in this opening salvo of the Monster Hunter series in regards to story and character introduction and setup. We get a good start with "Z" (as Owen is often referred to) and his pre-Monster Hunter days. His background. His family. And his upbringing. We are introduced to the government's Monster Control Bureau (MCB). It's leader Agent Myers. And Agent Franks, with whom Owen will build a love/hate (OK. maybe grudgingly like/hate) relationship throughout the series. Agent Franks may be my favorite character in the series.
We meet the Shackleford family and their Monster Hunter International Organization. Earl and Julie of the Shacklefords themselves. MHI stalwarts like Sam and Milo. And other newbies that progress through MHI training with Owen. Holley, Tripp and Arthur Lee.
Yeah. Yeah. There are bad guys too. Zombies. Vampires. And the Cursed One. But this book is very much more. It is a setup for a series and a mythology that Correia starts to build here and continues to build through the books that follow.
I enjoyed this listen immensely. And what I think Correia does best, here and in subsequent entries in the MHI series, is build a world and set of characters - paragraph by paragraph, chapter by chapter, book by book - that leaves you fulfilled while expectently waiting for the next story to come out.
I quite enjoyed the story in this audiobook. It's not going to blow your socks off with things you haven't heard/read before, but it's an entertaining action romp mixed with some comdey and romance. It's a bit long, and does drag in some parts that could have been better spent building the universe in which the story takes place, but like an action movie there's still plenty to have fun with. I think this biggest downfall is the narration. Wyman's male characters all sound far too similar and his female character are passable at best. If I do continue this series I will probably pick up the ebook rather than continue on with Wyman's narration.
Supernatural Hilarious Fun!
His delivery and character voices were superb and he is a fantastic story teller.
I did not want it to end!
Love Sci-Fi, Paranormal, Fantasy & Alternate History genres. Prefer action over romance.
Yes! Love the story, it's a blast!
Orgasmic description of Milo's invention "Abomination"
His gravelly voice fits the story. I like Owen's & Earl's voices the best. The voices for Earl & the Ray's are a little too similar. Not such a big fan of his female voices (except the old lady w/the fake leg - that one's great!). Overall I enjoyed the narrator very much, he's perfect!
Freaky, Fun, Over-the-top, Kick-Ass Entertainment. I'm not into guns but I still loved the in-depth enthusiastic descriptions. They added to the tone of the story. Yes it's outrageous. Yes, it's a little silly, but mostly it's just a whole 'lot of dang fun!. It's a no holds barred action extravaganza where the hero gets beat down, beat up & beat again sideways, but he also gets to put the hurt on a lot of monsters & bad guys. Good wins out over Evil, but just barely & only at the last minute. There's also pain & loss & characters die. Then there's formulaic romance w/a bit of a twist - the ugly guy with the big heart gets the gorgeous hot chick who's also tough as nails & a weapons fanatic. What's not to love? Based on reviews I started the series out of order w/#2 then #4, & now just got #1. Can be read out of order. I liked it enough to go back to the beginning! Is it a literary masterpieces? Maybe not. BUT IT IS one of the most enjoyable series I've ever listened to! If you want some easy listening fun with a gritty edge to it, Welcome to Monster Hunters International! Yea-haw!
This is one of my favourite books ever. Outstanding story telling. Not my number one but It must be my number two. The characters are so believable. Story has a depth you would not expect in a book like this.
The opening chapter in the office and I was hooked.
"Z" - is the man. Dry sense of humour and unlucky in love. He is the accountant we all want to be.
LOL> This is monster hunting!
You will love this book for the humour and the hardware.
The seriousness mixed with tongue and cheek play. Made you laugh out loud in some places.
When one character describes the family of the one he loves, but still wants her.
The wink and joy with some characters that you can only get with spoken word.
This will most likely become my new favorite series. Loved the interaction and play between the characters. It made me laugh out loud in some parts while still being suspenseful.
A fun story.
Harbinger.. just a cool character.
The guy was a good reader, but sounds way to old for the 24 year old Pitt. He sounds like he's channeling a younger James Stewart(younger as in mid 50s.)
It fit for some of the voices(meyers, and Owen's dad) but not Pitt, and not Harbinger.
Same as the business card. Monster Problems? Call the Professionals.
Love this series, disappointed in the voice acting.
I attempt to keep books only in one format; paperback, audio, or e-book. I love this series so much that it has joined the select rank of e-book and audio. I am not a monster movie fan. I generally don't care for blood and gore. I am NOT a gun nut. Somehow the underlying comic book feel makes it all good.
Something for everyone; monsters, massive firepower, Characters...even romance. (Awwwww....)
