This book was far outside of my usual reading list but after a suggestion from a friend I gave it a listen and was pleasantly surprised. Wonderful book
I haven't had so much fun with a book in years!
The story continuously delivers in its creativity, humor and quality!!
The performance made this book for me. Recommending to everyone!!
An interesting storyline with fun, quirky characters. some of the battle scene descriptions seemed to go on longer than necessary, but overall, lots of action.
I have to say this story really pleasantly surprised me. The first opening chapters are pretty hokey, and set up a B-movie horror tone that initially put me off. But I decided to give the story a chance and keep going, and I was really glad I did. By chapter 2 the world was expanding, bringing in lots of interesting and unique characters, fleshing out the protagonists and gradually introducing us to the world of monster hunting. The further you go the more details the story works in, with a real pseudo-science flair that gives the story a solid ground to work from, even as all sorts of fantasy terms and creatures are showing up.
The action scenes are top notch and complex, with lots of detailed gun play, monsters, and characters all working together. But even the most chaotic battle scenes aren't hard to follow thanks to the concise writing and skilled narration.
The story is dark, and creepy, and has tons of gore and ooze- but it always has such irresistible charm. It reals you in with it's memorable side characters, grotesque monsters, and surprising twists- and before you know it you're 15 chapters in and you can't put it down.
I really can't talk about the monsters and guns enough- they are such an integral part of the story and it really shows the author loved writing about them. Every claw, scale, fang and tentacle is dripping with dark detail and gruesome purpose. And I really loved how the monsters themselves all drew on popular horror tropes, but with a new twist that made this story feel unique. The guns, on the other hand, are a real learning experience. The author clearly did a lot of research for this series- going into all the little bits and pieces of character's individual firearms. They aren't just "guns," they're an extension of the characters that own them, and they make our heroes feel even more unique and interesting.
There were weak parts to the book though. Romantic themes in the book are pretty heavy handed, and don't add a whole lot to the overall plot. And while I liked the overall writing of the book, the dialogue really left a lot to be desired. There were a fair amount of corny one liners and dramatic proclamations that made parts feel more like a campy action movie. Those were the hardest parts to listen to, for me anyway.
This story was just a complete blast to listen to, and if you're looking for something fun, with mature themes, but not too complex- then I would highly recommend it.
I loved how the story tied up all of it's loose ends. There is a wide cast of characters and lots of different plot lines- but none of them get lost, or fall by the wayside. Everyone gets a chance to shine and have a satisfying character ark, and all the questions get answered. If you only want to listen to this one story you could, but it opens up so many different possibilities for larger world building that you want to know more.
Oliver does a great job giving every character a really distinct voice. Some narrators have trouble differentiating between different accents, but he gives everyone their own personality and "voice." He also does a great job bringing the monsters and action to life- drawing you in and really enthralling you in the darkest parts of the story.
It was honestly hard to put down. I drive for a living, and I found I could put this book on in the morning and listen to it for an entire day without stepping away.
If you give this story a chance I think you'll really be pleasantly surprised by it and get wrapped up in it's dark and exciting world.
Great characters and inventive plot and plenty of non stop mayhem. Excellent narration. ....thoroughly enjoyable. Will definitely get the next installment.
I had this book on my wish list for a while, hesitated on purchasing it for a while just because of the cover art but it had great reviews. Finally purchased it and completely loved it! The story started out great and never slowed with its momentum! Great story telling and plot! Just downloaded the second book and can't wait!
Great story-line with a plot that takes you down several paths without being disjointed. Owen, the main character is likable and funny. Fantastic action. The first hour will have you on your seat edge!
Oliver Wyman does a masterful job at narration bringing the characters to life in your minds eye and makes the different characters distinct, all with enjoyable personalities.
Was a great book. I really loved it but it is definitely not a romance. Lots and lots of fighting so if you like your fight scenes this is the book for you. Narrator did a great job.
